7 or 8 series packages

Anybody know if there is any chance that Xilinx will go back to offering a leaded package in the future?

The TQ144 or PQ208 are helpful for small companies that don't have the facilities to place BGAs. I know they are more expensive to make, have a lower yield, and are larger, but the cost of getting BGAs placed outside are considerable . The higher price for a leaded part would be minimal compared to the production costs incurred to place BGAs.

It's unlikely that newer FPGA's, at least at the high end will have leaded packages in

the future.  CPLD's will continue to have them.

 

Most companies that don't have BGA placement capability already send out most of their

board assembly to specialized assembly houses.  Unless you're dong extermely low

volumes or have very low employee salaries (read hobbyist) it's likely to be cheaper

to outsource assembly even if you keep it on-shore.

 

There are a number of other companies who make low-end low-cost FPGA's that will probably

continue to supply them in quad flat packs.  Also note that some "CPLD's" made by companies

other than Xilinx are really small FPGA's by architecture (e.g. Lattice MachXO).

 

Newer faster products are less likely to be able to use the older QFP packaging because of the

large lead inductance.

 

20 years ago, the world moved to surface mount components, and many people complained about

lack of availablility of newer parts in through-hole packages.  It's about time to get used to leadless

packaging if you want to keep up with technology.

7-Series packages ARE offered in leaded options.

If you remove the "G" designator, it implies a leaded part.

Jon,

 

Lead in this case is referring to a package pin leg/lead versus a package pin ball (leadless) and not the elemental material composition (Pb vs Pb-free/lead-free).

I think you are confusing "lead" (pronounced "led"), which is a now-banned metal, with "lead" (pronounced "leed"), which is a pin that sticks out of the package.

This same data applies to the lead-free versions of the packages. The lead-free version of these packages has the letter “G” appended
before the numeric portions of the package code (for example, the lead-free version of TQ144 will be TQG144). The same data
applies to both packages.
