Can we implement USB 2.0 or 3.0 communication in FPGA?

Hello,

I want to have interface between FPGA and camera (image processing by taking the data from camera). What type of interfacing i can have on FPGA side? I am planning to choose Sparta6LX45-2FGG-484I. Wether this FPGA will support? Please suggest me how to go ahead?

Thanks You in Advance,
Mahesh Hegde.

What camera?
Does it support CameraLink?

Hi,

Any USB camera available in the market?I don't have idea to build camera by using sensors. Simply i am planning to take  the data from camera and processing that data.

Thanks You in Advance,

HDMI or Cameralink connection to camera would be much much simpler and much less software and hardware design work for you compared to implementing a USB Host interface.

Hi Mahesh,

what kind of cameras and application do you have in mind?

Ther are low cost IP-Cameras available.

And for some industrial application you could also use cameras with ethernet interface. (GigE)

And ethernet is a quite good supported interface for FPGAs too.

Have a nice synthesis

What's your system goal? Why do you need to interface a camera to an FPGA?

Yes, I do this for a living.

Re: Can we implement USB 2.0 or 3.0 communication in FPGA?

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.Basically we are manufacturer of Servo Hydrolic Machines. These machines used to test the material(All type of materials) properties. While testing(Cycling continously by applying load on that material) the materials crack may form on that material. To measure this we are using Extensometer device.

To avoid that measuring device we are planning to use camera interfacing with FPGA.We are planning to take the image(data) from camera storing it into DDR2.Then procesing may be in FPGA or DSP, that not decided yet. After processing we are planning to transfer the processed information to the PC using DSP.  For PC communication we have DSP on the same board.

Please guide me to take the steps.

Thanks You in Advance,
Mahesh Hegde.

Please don't take this the wrong way, I don't mean to be condescending, nor do I want to belittle or insult you:

Does your employer know that you have basically no idea how to even begin solving this problem?

A lot might depend on the hardware design you create, especially if it's used for material testing: a mistake you make might cost your company (or the company using your products) a lot of money, not to mention the liability for you and your company if human life is lost.

Frankly, judging by your forum posts, I wouldn't trust you with this kind of job. Are you sure you're up to it?

Hello Awillen,

We have some design. But this design cost will become more comparatively. So we are looking for suggestions. If you have any suggestions we are open for that.

Thanks You in Advance,

Just asking questions -- what if??

Well, it's certainly a relief to hear that you won't have responsibility for implementing this design.  You are merely asking complete strangers to help architect and define your product for you, based on knowledge of your application and requirements which amounts to little more than nil.  For a moment there, I thought this project might be headed for rough times.

I think you give us (the strangers on these forums) a bit too much credit for insight, mind-reading, and cleverness.  And clearly we give you, Mahesh, too little credit.

If you wish to prosper in your role of information gatherer, rather than design creator, I have a suggestion to offer you:  Consider using the forum search tools and web search tools (google is one of the more popular search tools, by the way) to help you gather useful information.

For example, if you were to ask for descriptive or defining documents on the subjects of HDMI or Cameralink, these documents are well known to the various web search tools.  And these documents have been discussed and referenced in numerous Xilinx forum threads.
