XC3S200 getting heated up

Dear All,

I am using XILINX S3 FPGA XC3S200 on my board. Earlier it was working properly, but now it is getting heated up. Still it is working. I ahve checked for any short at the supply and it is not there.

What may be the reason. Please suggest.

Re: XC3S200 getting heated up

What did you do to it?
Have you connected the board to anything new?
Are the power supplies still the same voltages as before?

If the BIT file is the same but it is now running hotter, then the FPGA is probably damaged.

Re: XC3S200 getting heated up

My FPGA board is actually a daughter board to another board, and it is connected to several other boards through ports.

Bit file is same.

Voltge supplies are same as before.

Even when I am not using fpga and just power on the board, fpga gets heated up.

Imp thing is that when I use the fpga, it oprates in the desired manner.

Re: XC3S200 getting heated up

It seems some IOs are damaged. Maybe it is not fully damage but I think you'd better replace this chip.

These damages most are caused by ESD.

You didn't connect the FPGA to 5V IO, right?

Re: XC3S700 getting heated up

Hello,

I am using xc3s700an fpga it is also heating too much.

as per previous discussion assuming that some IO's got damaged I replaced the chip.

But then later I came to know that after programming .mcs file only it will start heating. so its not a power problem.

Can you please help me to overcome this problem?

For my fpga DAC,ADC,and some transceivers are interfaced directly. in few modules I am facing this problem.

Thanks..

Re: XC3S700 getting heated up

Some times the heating occurs when there is a wrong assingment on pins. I experienced a case where two devices were driving simultaneously on the same signal and the device was getting heated. In my case one of the power supply went wrong.

Without knowing the details of your design, including how much of the FPGA's resources are used, and the clock frequency, it's entirely possible that you need to heatsink your FPGA. That is not uncommon. Use the power-estimator tool.

Re: XC3S700 getting heated up

Sound like your output pin(s) have been short

try to reduce number of output (by half) to see if the heat goes away ?
