Hi all,
Is Xilinx planning to have any feature built inside FPGA where MGT interfaced with optics providing direct optical signal transmitting and receiving without the need for a discrete optical module. ALTERA claims to have in the WP attached.
regards
Chandra

Chandra,
Altera is frantic right now: they are badly behind, even though they started at 28nm before we did. They have no SSI (the 2000T and 1140T are sampling), and they have no ARM SoC+FPGA shipping. We have announced Kintex production status. And we have Virtex parts, too (Zynq is Artix fabric, so we have all three verified, characterized).
They claim anything (and everything) they can to distract from the truth.
We have been looking at direct optical interfacing for more than ten years. Unless it is something we can actually build, verify, characterize, test, and ship, it has no value to us, or our customers.
Are you an Altera employee? If so, I am very sorry for you, and I will be sure to get you thrown off the forums (if so). Go spread their lies elsewhere, please! comp.arch.fpga is still read by a few.... perhaps you will find an audience there?
If you are not an Altera 'shill', then I apologize: but I am annoyed at their fluff and noise. Of courzse, that is my own personnal problem, not yours. I suggest you call them up and try to order this wonderful optical fantasy. Once you discover you have been lied to, I hope you come back to your senses, and visit us again.

Thanks Austin for your agressive reply. I'm not related to Altera anyways. I'm a Xilinx FAE @ AVNET INDIA.
We've been educating customers on the claims made by ALTERA earlier and we continue to do so in future also.
regards
Chandra

Chandra,
I apologize. You may note that marketing has sent out the response for you to present to customers on this subject.
If any white paper has false misleading claims (like many), marketing replies within a day or two on the usual places...
