How to choose an FPGA

Hi all!

I'm currently working on a university project, based on the implementation of FFT on a FPGA. My professor told me that the first step is the choice of the correct (or the most suitable) board. Unfortunately i don't know how to make the best choice in terms of memory, DSP blocks and so on. Obviously i have to take into account the price of the board itself.

Could you give some hints ?

Thanks in advance.

Re: How to choose an FPGA

One thing you might do is to look into the XIlinx FFT IP cores and see if they

publish the typical usage data for LUTs FFs BRAMs DSP48s etc.  Then you

can get an idea how large an FPGA you need from the first few pages of

the FPGA family overview.  If you're cost-conscious I would recommend

a Spartan-6 based board, or possibly Spartan 3A DSP.

The other obvious issue is how you need to get data into or out of your

FFT.  A large part of board selection is making sure you have the

required interfaces (PCIe, Ethernet, USB, etc.).

Then go to the "boards and kits" section of the forums and search for

items of interest.  Not all boards and kits are available directly from

XIlinx, although there is a good selection at least for newer FPGA

families.  See if others are looking for the same features you need

and if they found a solution.

You might also want to download the Xilinx Document Navigator.

Re: How to choose an FPGA

You can have a look at below Product Selection Guide.

http://www.xilinx.com/publications/matrix/Product_Selection_Guide.pdf

Go to page 27 for the board list.

If you have picked up some boards in your interest, you can go to our webside to get more details about that board.

for example, you can go to www.xilinx.com/ml605 if you want to see more details for ML605 board.
