Why must the binary point be bounded?

Why I cannot specify a fixed point type in System Generator with a binary point outside [0,N] where N is the number of bits? For example, why is -1 not a reasonable position for the binary point? For a specific example showing this boundedness requirement, use the Reinterpret block.

The binary point is used to align fixed point types. A binary point of -2 would just mean that the LSB of a number would correspond to 4. Why is there such a restriction?

Can anyone point to to a resource explaining why this is the case?

Hi dmittiga,

Thanks for writing to us.

Sysgen tool is designed such that it does not accept any binary point location outside the specified range. In the simulation, we can add support for these scenarios but it is very challenging to handle them in the code generation that Sysgen supports. This is something which Sysgen can not handle right now
