Complex or Simple, which is right for you?

With complex network switches, also known as managed Ethernet switches, if you aren’t sure if you need one, you probably don’t. But truthfully, there are a lot of great features that managed Ethernet switches offer. And, if you're dealing with things that can never, ever, ever, never, ever, never fail—things like, hello, the electrical grid, or the plane you are sitting in, factories with high-speed robots and the like, they are mandatory features. Snooping for cybersecurity, reserving bandwidth for critical data, customized network setup and partitioning, fancy routing, redundancy to be fail-safe, and many other features typically come as part of the package with these complex network switches.

 

If you are new to the world of managed Ethernet switches, don’t flip when you hear that you’ll likely have to buy one that is too big, too expensive, and too power hungry for what you need. A switch that is too small is obviously useless. But getting a switch that has the perfect number of ports, the right mix of features, the ideal chassis size…it’s like winning the lottery! However, it can feel like it carries about the same odds when buying a switch off-the-shelf.

 

Avoid an Epic DIY Fail

While some do-it-yourself projects are doomed to epic fails, a DIY managed ethernet switch is really smart. First, you have control over the features, which is good because features drive cost, power, and physical size. Second, you don’t have to drop an extra chip in your system. If you have a Xilinx Zynq SoC in your system, you can scale it to include switch functionality. Third, it’s actually not a true DIY project because you have proven IP cores, documentation, boards, support, and even design services from Xilinx partner, SoC-e. They take the “complex” out of designing complex network switches. 

 

Xilinx Zynq SoCs use Arm processors coupled with a digital sandbox, which is user customizable. This combination is ideal for the lowest total cost complex network switches with the lowest latency.
