UltraZed-EV: A Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC System-on-Module

Avnet has recently released a new member of the UltraZed family System On Module (SOM). The UltraZed-EV features a Zynq® UltraScale+™ MPSoC XCZU7EV, joining the previously released UltraZed-EG, which is based on EG devices. The XCZU7EV is the largest of the EV devices. With 504K logic cells, 27.0Mb of UltraRAM, and 1728 DSP slices, the XCZU7EV on the UltraZed-EV is ideally suited for multimedia applications!

Multimedia Needs Require Industry-Leading Solutions

Multimedia algorithms are highly math intensive. Parallelized math operations are ideally suited for the programmable logic. Let’s say you wanted to implement the H.264 or H.265 standard. You could overwhelm your processing resources with one of these compression algorithms, but with Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC, you have the luxury of using other resources to perform these algorithms much faster and without burdening the processor. With the ever-increasing demands of cutting-edge designs, developers are turning to more sophisticated technology like the Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC XCZU7EV. Along with the newly released UltraZed-EV comes an Avnet kit that includes a SOM, carrier card, and license for Vivado Design Edition.

 

Powerful VCU Allows Developers High-Quality Video Applications
One resource on the UltraZed-EV that sets it apart is the video codec unit (VCU). The VCU allows for real-time encoding and decoding of either H.264 or H.265 standards at 4K2K resolution—four times full HD—with a 60 frames per second (fps) bandwidth. Using the resources included on the UltraZed-EV, you can perform simultaneous encode and decode of 1080p at 60fps.

 

Kits Offer a Powerful Prototyping Platform
What’s more, the UltraZed-EV SOM makes your design process easier. Many of the complicated circuits are included on the 20-layer SOM and then routed to connectors on the bottom of the board. Even challenging signals easily pass from the board to a powerful carrier card that can break out almost all of the signaling from three Samtec SEARAY™ 0.80 connectors included on the UltraZed-EV system. Infineon’s PMBus-enabled IRPS5401 power management IC, as well as the IR38063 regulator, provide the bulk of the power on the SOM, while the transceiver and I/O bank power are provided from the carrier card. The Avnet carrier card also features these power regulators. The same PMBus signals are accessible through the board-to-board connectors, allowing you to communicate directly with this bus, allowing for real-time monitoring, control, and fault recognition. Besides power and connectivity, the Avnet Carrier Card also has an LVDS touch panel interface, HDMI In/Out, 3G-SDI In/Out, dual SFP+ interfaces, and FMC HPC expansion slot. That way, you can prototype knowing that the power you get from the included card will help you fine-tune your custom solution.
