Alveo Board: Flash reload

Jump to solution

Hi,

After reprogramming the Alveo flash with a new DSA, the documentation asks us to cold reboot the platform.

Is there any way to force the FPGA load from flash operation without cold reboot?

Regards

Hi @gdufourcq,

The reload of the FPGA from flash is dependent on the power rails to the card going down and back up.  At this time, the only way to manage that is through a cold reboot of the system.  After the cold reboot, you should be able to load and unload xclbin files without further reboot needed (basically only required when you change out shells).

Sincerely,

Beth

Often it is possible to remotely reboot a server using an IPMI tool that you have set up previously. For example, Dell Power Edge servers have an iDRAC system that can receive commands to cold boot a server. We find this type of cold booting to work as it removes *most* power from the PCIe slot.

The remaining power line from most IPMI cold boots is the PCIe AUX power. Sometimes PCIe AUX power needs to be removed to reset a satellite controller hang - directions will typically require you to unplug the server or remove the card from the server. While some iDRAC (and iDRAC like) systems will have options to shut off PCIe AUX power remotely, this might not be a standard feature. Please check with your server vendor for all remote power options.
