Vivado 2013.3 – project files that need to be under source management

Jump to solution

I am trying to find out what Vivado project files I need to put under SVN in order to recreate the project from SVN.

I keep all my IP cores under one folder and all my VHDL source files and constraint files *.xdc in another folder. The Vivado project files are in a third separate folder.

I have put under SVN management my core and source folders. I also have put the Vivado *.xpr , *.dcp and vivado.data project files under SVN.

When I try to load the Vivado project with the above SVN files only, I got error message “Failed to load run data” screen:

Failed to load run data.JPG

then when looking in the “Messages” window I see these warnings:

warning messages.JPG

I have a backup folder of my project that Vivado loads successfully with no errors. It contains the same SVN folders and files plus many others Vivado specific project files (total folder size 3.53GB). I was wondering what other Vivado specific project files I need to put under SVN in order to avoid the above error.

Regards,

Vlad

You are getting following warning because you are migrating your project from older version of vivado to newer version of vivado.
First of all click on save project as. Save the project.

Please go to Click on tools --> report --> report IP status. If you check in the bottom of Vivado GUI you now have an option to upgrade.

Please upgrade your IP & Generate the output projects.
Then there won't be any warning.

Thanks.

Actually I have already migrated the project successfully. The whole project folder size is around 3.5Gb and this huge size is because if many Vivado temporary (generated) project files.

The question is what Vivado project files I can trim (not saving under source management in SVN) in order to recreate the project from SVN in an empty folder. I can't put the whole 3.5Gb files of data in SVN.

For example, with ISE I had to save only my source files, *.ucf files and one ISE project file in SVN to be able to recreate the project from scratch.

What are the essential Vivado project files I need to save in SVN in order to recreate the project from scratch?

You can use archive project option under files.

Files --> archive project.

If you do not want to keep the run results then uncheck the box before archiving the project.

Try this & check whether your design size got reduced to some extent.

Thanks

It looks like Vivado projects haven’t been considered to integrate with source management systems.

Many of the essential project files change on every rebuild (even on Vivado restart) without any configuration change in the project. It makes it impossible to trace project configuration changes.

Saving these project files under source configuration management is pointless. At the end I decided to save only the project archive binary in SVN and manually keep track on project configuration changes.

Hi,

Please try this with the example project & let me know your outcome.

Open any example project & run till implementation & exit vivado 2013.3.

Then go to project directory & try to open the design without any changes.

It will open from the same state from where you have stopped.

Thanks
