Vivado 2016.2 slower then 2015

Jump to solution

Hi,

I have moved all my work from Vivado 2015.4 to Vivado 2016.2.

The new version seems to have problems: synthesis & implementation time are similar, but the software interface is incredibly slow.

It takes several seconds only to mark one menu, or to open one window.

This problem is related to the size of the project: bigger the projkect, slower the interface.

Can I do something to solve this problem?

Thank you in advance

Please try the patch at: http://www.xilinx.com/support/answers/67729.html

2016.2 Vivado - Vivado 2016.2 becomes slow or unresponsive after generating output products for an IP Integrator Block Design (BD).

The issue seems to have been over aggressive polling of runs directories to maintain status and messaging for each run.  The problem gets worse with more runs (e.g. Block Diagram instance with generated  output products as "OOC per IP"  Running over a network or on any system that might cause a slower file check, exaggerates the problem.  This will be fixed in Vivado 2016.3 as well.

Hi @zini.emanuele.raytec

Did you check the memory usage with 2016.2?

As a trial, please uninstall 2015 (if you still have)/free-up the memory and see if that help.

Thanks,Vijay

Hi @vijayak,

I should keep Vivado 2015.1 to use with old projects, but I have 32 GB of RAM...

Hi @zini.emanuele.raytec

As I said, this is just for testing the performance. You may reinstall 2015.1.

Did you try rebooting the machine?

Thanks,Vijay

Hi @vijayak,

I have unistalled Vivado 2015.1 and reboot everything

Now I have only vivado 2016.2, but it is still extremely slow with big projects.

Can I try other things?

Thanks

Emanuele

Hi @zini.emanuele.raytec

Is it possible to share the design & the steps you followed?

Also let us know on which phase you are seeing the run time issues.

Thanks,Vijay

Re: Vivado 2016.2 slower then 2015

Hi @vijayak,

unfottunately I am nmot permitted to share the project, i can share only the file .xpr if can help

I can try to enumerate some of the features used:

 - Project on  Zynq 7030

 - zynq features used in the design: gpio, acp, hp0, hp2, hp3,

 - Ip used:  dma's, vdma's, bram's, gpio, xadc, ..

 - post-implementation utilization as in the picture attached

To migrate the project from 2015.4 to 2016.2 I follow these spets:

 - reset the project, reset output products of any ip and design,

 - open the project with 2016.2

 - update any ip as asked

 - check up the project settings

 - repeat the sysnthesis & implementation

The result is that as soon as i open the project, Vivado is extremely slow in any operation, even to open a window.

Doesn't matter if the project is implemented or not.

Thanks,

Emanuele

Hi @zini.emanuele.raytec

.xpr doesnt help in debugging these issues.

This could be a machine specific or design specific memory leakage issue related to Vivado. These kind of issues are hard to guide to a solution without having the design at our end to reproduce and debug.

1) Try using another machine with the same project.

2) Try running other project (with high utilization) with your machine.

Thanks,Vijay

Vijay,

I have the same issue.  This is terrible,  editing block designs is painful.  I have upgraded multiple versions and have not seen this kind of slow down.  Plenty of disk space and memory.  The project is on a network drive not local but this is the same as v2015.4.

I see a slow down when using the RTL viewer, I don't recall seeing such a performance hit when using 2015.4 but with 2016.2 I sometimes wait a minute or two for the screen to refresh with the rtl schematic.

Thank you, @howardp

with this patch Vivado 2016 is now working good, as I expected.

Thanks.
