impact error : ECP port test failed

Jump to solution

I have spartan 3 fpga starter kit. I have generated the .bit  file using xilinx ise 10.1 and now trying to download it to the kit.

As I run xilinx Impact it shows me cable error, as follows.

Checking cable driver.
 Driver windrvr6.sys version = 8.1.1.0. WinDriver v8.11 Jungo (c) 1997 - 2006 Build Date: Oct 16 2006 X86 32bit SYS 12:35:07, version = 811.
 LPT base address = 0378h.
 ECP base address = 0778h.
Cable connection established.
ECP port test failed. Using download cable in compatibility mode.

From the help I came to know that in the fileset.txt file following line should be present.

<Date of install> <Time> <Year>:: summary=Parallel Cable Drivers

This line is absent in my fileset.txt in C:\Xilinx\10.1\ISE folder. The contents are as below.

Thu Feb 03 16:58:35 TZ 2011::  product=ISE
Thu Feb 03 16:58:35 TZ 2011::  configuration=Foundation
Thu Feb 03 16:58:35 TZ 2011::  version=10.1
Thu Feb 03 16:58:35 TZ 2011::  Registration_ID=1AN2AMZ5JHJXSA9EXZTK431J1
Thu Feb 03 16:58:35 TZ 2011::  summary=Location: C:\Xilinx\10.1\ISE
Thu Feb 03 16:58:35 TZ 2011::  summary=Design Environment Tools
Thu Feb 03 16:58:35 TZ 2011::  summary=All FPGA devices except Virtex4 and Virtex5

The parallel port in the BIOS menu is set to ECP mode and enabled as well.
The device manager shows the parallel port is enabled.
I have reinstalled the ISE 3 times.

Kindly suggest any solution for my problem.

Kindly also tell me that how do I know that my FPGA is damaged or not.

Regards.

Thank you Sir for your reply.

I checked all options on the link you gave me. But they mostly refer to USB cable and I have parallel cable IV.

In the below link they have given few solutions.

http://www.xilinx.com/support/answers/15742.htm

In here they say that the "windrvr.sys" and "xpc4drvr.sys" files are required. I have checked my system32/driver folder.

I have "windrvr6.sys" instead of ''windrvr.sys".

Can this be any reason for ECP port test failing?

Also I do not understand that why my fileset.txt file does not have following line. The installation showed no error.

<Date of install> <Time> <Year>:: summary=Parallel Cable Drivers

I am using impact 12.1 (I have also used xilinx 10.1 and obtained the same error).

Kindly suggest any possible solution.

Regards.

Here's the board user guide for the Spartan 3 Starter Kit.

The jumper settings for the various configuration modes are illustrated in Table 9-1.

For configuring the FPGA via the Platform Cable, select the JTAG mode.

Hello Bob,

Thank you for your concern to reply.

I read the user guide and verified the jumper settings as well.

Still the kit does not respond and I get the same error.

Could it be that the kit is damaged due to any voltage fluctuations?(I hope not..!!)

These are last guesses.

Hello everyone,

I got the solution for this thread.

In my Xilinx impact I have not initialized the JTAG chain.

Now the FPGA is programmed and working fine.

Thanx to both the contributors for their efforts.
