Beginners problems with Ultrazed-eg

Hi,

I'm a total beginner with these devices so there might be some very silly mistakes but hope I get some ansvers.

So I have Ultazed-eg and trying to get started with this device.
Installed programs that I have are all 2017.2.


So what I have done so far:
- Created a project on Vivado, Avnet UltraZed-3EG IO Carrier Card
- Added MPSoC to design
- Disabled AXI HPM0 PLD from configuration because I was told it could cause some problems because I'm not using it
- Disabled display port because I had problems with it
- Verified
- Created hdl wrapper
- Generated bitstream
- Exported HW
- Started SDK
- Created BSP with 32-bit compiler
- Created Hello World project
- Got this running via JTAG after these instructions http://zedboard.org/content/aes-zu3eges-1-sk-g-sktutorial20164-mask-poll-failed-address-0xfd4023e4-mask-0x00000010
- Copied .hdf to Ubuntu
- petalinux-create -t project -s uz3eg_iocc_2017_2.bsp --name test_boot
- petalinux-config --get-hw-description=/home/vk/project_1.sdk
- In config I set primary SD to boot image, kernel image, dtb image and root file.
- petalinux-build
- petalinux-package --boot --format BIN --fsbl ./images/linux/zynq_fsbl.elf --fpga ./images/linux/download.bit --u-boot
- Prepared 8GB SD card like here is instructed https://medium.com/developments-and-implementations-on-zynq-7000-ap/install-ubuntu-16-04-lts-on-zynq-zc702-using-petalinux-2016-4-e1da902eaff7
- Also took the root filesystem from the link above
- Copied files to BOOT and rootfs like in the link above

When I boot the device from SD-card I get following log:

Any idea how to fix this?

Eth cable is not connected to my board, that's why the timeout in the output.

 

My goal is to get the CPU side working so that I can produce code/programs there. I'll get to FPGA later.
I'd like also to get advises for using CPU-side efficiently. Most of the tutorials and examples are for FPGA.
What framework or libraries can I use on the CPU-side? How to import and use those libraries?

I've seen some Qt examples but those are all for older versions of petalinux and vivado.
Has anyone used Qt on Ultrazed with 2017 version softwares?

 

I have used linux before but when I tried the arch linux I felt that I have never used linux...

Hi @waldemar,

 

your Linux system is not booting because the kernel cannot mount the rootfs.

 

The boot arguments are telling the kernel, that the rootfs is in the second partition of the device mmc 0 (I assume this is the SD card)

(Just to be sure, check that the SD card has the 2 partitions, but I assume this has properly done correctly)

 

In my opinion, the problem is that the SD card is being mounted as device mmc 1 and the flash as mmc 0, that's why the kernel is looking in the wrong place. So the solution would be to tell him to look on mmc 1. To test this, just follow these steps:

 

  1. Stop U-Boot when it says "Hit any key to stop autoboot".
  2. Copy this line in the terminal:
    setenv bootargs 'earlycon clk_ignore_unused root=/dev/mmcblk1p2 rw rootwait'
  3. Write on U-Boot:
    boot

 

Now it should boot.

 


 

Just another thing: U-Boot is booting the kernel from the Flash!! U-Boot shows you the mmc devices:

 

MMC:   sdhci@ff160000: 0 (eMMC), sdhci@ff170000: 1 (SD)

 

 

And then it indicates you that it is taking the kernel from flash:

This should also be changed if you want to use your own kernel.

 

  • Check if the jumpers of your board are OK
  • If it doesn't change, check if Petalinux configuration indicates to boot from SD card.

If it keeps taking the kernel from flash, let me know and we will see how to change that by changing the configuration of U-Boot. But first let's look if the new bootargs make Linux boot ;)

If you take a look to the mmc kernel bring up you can actually check how mmc0 refers to the eMMC device and mmc1 to the SD card which has actually two partitions as expected.

I did as you instructed but the result is still the same. Jumpers/boot mode switch on the board is set to SD1 (OFF-ON-OFF-ON).

Hi @waldemar,

 

the kernel still cannot mount the rootfs, but now the error is different (-30). Your kernel and device tree are still being loaded from the eMMC. That means, they are not the ones that you created with Petalinux:

I think it makes sense to first boot your actual kernel and device tree and then see why it cannot mount the roofs.

thanks for the info! Could you try stopping the U-Boot autoboot timeout and inserting these commands? The purpose is to load kernel + device tree from your SD:

Hi @waldemar,

 

the kernel is booting OK but it's not being able to mount the rootfs... Let's check if the rootfs is there and if there is any problem with the device-tree regarding the SD card:

 

  1. Could you check if the 2nd partition of your SD is actually ext4? Can you "ls" it to see what it contains?
  2. Could you attach the file system.dtb of your 1st SD partition?

I suppose point 1 is going to be OK. Regarding point 2, it could be that a parameter for the SD driver is missing in the device tree.

Hi @waldemar,

 

your device tree seems ok. What surprises me is that, even though you are introducing the U-Boot commands to load from the SD, it's loading exactly the same kernel (and possibly device-tree) as before... (the ones on eMMC).

 

What happens if you rename temporarily the "image.ub" file of the first partition of the SD to, for example "image.ub_NO"?

  1. After renaming, does the board boot without interrupting u-boot?
  2. After renaming, does the board boot interrupting U-Boot with the last commands I posted?

Could you save the logs and attach them?

 

After testing, don't forget to rename the "image.ub_NO" to its original name.

Hi @waldemar,

 

ok, so it's loading your kernel + device tree...

 

I cannot understand why the kernel is not able to load the rootfs... In this situation, I would probably create a version with a ramdisk and once it booted I would check if the SD card works properly on Linux... I'm sorry that I cannot contribute with more ideas. If I think of any other possible solution, I will let you know.

@imgignacio thank you for your effort with the problem.

I got something solved and got Ubuntu started.

There were an option "Device node SD device" in petalinux-config that I changed from /dev/mmcblk0p2 to /dev/mmcblk1p2.

This didn't solve the problem and the same error messages appeared but maybe that has something to do with this.

Then I entered commands:

setenv bootargs root=/dev/mmcblk1p2 rw rootwait rootfstype=ext4 rootdelay=5
fatload mmc 1 0x3000000 image.ub
bootm 0x3000000

and still no luck.

Then I saw somewhere a similar commands with ro not rw parameters and then Ubuntu started as I replaced that parameter.

So now I can start Ubuntu but it's in read only mode and I get errors:

-bash: cannot create temp file for here-document: Read-only file system

Some progress but still not running like it should.

And it seems that I got this thing solved by editing ptlnx-prjct/project-spec/meta-user/recipes-bsp/device-tree/filessystem-user.dtsi.

I added line

disable-wp;

to sdhci0.

Then configured, built and packaged the project and it worked.

I followed all the instructions and could reproduce errors. I solved it by adding

disable-wp;

to sdhci1 instead of sdhci0 (which I found here: http://www.zedboard.org/content/ultrazed-iocc-sd-card-ro)
