How do you open a terminal session for an FPGA (other than the first FPGA) in a JTAG chain?

Normally, in order to open a terminal session to the first FPGA in a JTAG chain, I would run these commands in XMD:

connect mb mdm -debugdevice devicenr 1
terminal

But, now I need to open a terminal to the 2nd FPGA in a JTAG chain, so naturally I tried this:

connect mb mdm -debugdevice devicenr 2
terminal

but this opens a terminal session to the first FPGA in the chain. I can tell because: 1) it doesn't work 2) when I run the "targets" command I see the following:

XMD% targets

------------------------------------------------ System(0) - Hardware System on FPGA(Device 2) Targets: -------------------------

Target(0) - MicroBlaze(1) Debug Target

------------------------------------------------ System(1) - Hardware System on FPGA(Device 1) Targets: -------------------------

Target(256) - MDM Uart Channel Target

How do you specify the chain? The "terminal" command doesn't have a chain option as I see in the XMD manual.
