I am not sure about the reason for this error  . After the last line given here, booting gets hung.

 I have uart0 aliases in device tree, also defined its addresses in pcw.dtsi.  Also bootagrs have console=dsns specified automatically by petalinux configuration. I am using Petalinux 2017.2 kernel source

Hi @timduffy , I am targetting zynqMP SoC in Ultrazed board. Sticking on to 2016.3 petalinux flow, but changed kernel sources remote to 2017.2 commit of xilinx. Attached is my .hdf file , it it helps.

Please find the attached DTS files.  I have added PHY Ethernet node and SD card node in system-top.dts. Also needed to make an edit to memory node address in system-conf.dtsi as told my avnet. Do not think they are related to this problem. Dont know why forum not allowing me to attach .dts files and hence copy pasted system-top.dts

So I don't see anywhere that enables uart0 or uart1. You have an alias to serial0 in your system-conf.dtsi file, but I don't see where &uart0 { status="okay"; } exists.

Hi @timduffy , It is there in pcw.dtsi . Also you may notice that bootargs console is set to ttyS0 in system-conf.dtsi. This was manually changed after I got that error. It was actually set to cdns automatically by petalinux-config. When I give it as ttyS0, booting stucks at starting kernel.

Also, one more thing i suspect is .hdf file. It was created using vivado 2016.4 . But here kernel sources is from petalinux 2017.2. This problem started happening only when I took remote kernel source (2017.2 tag) . It was working fine with this dts files configuration when I was using 2016.3 petalinux kernel sources.

When you see the "Starting kernel ..." and it stops, it's very possible that the kernel is actually still booting, it just has the wrong stdin/stdout ( uart ) assigned to it.

 

With that being said, I agree that mixing and matching Vivado versions/SDK versions and the kernel tags can get pretty messy ( the kernel moves fast! ).  What are your options to move forward to Vivado 2017.2, or rewind the kernel to the 2016.4 tag?

Hi @timduffy , I upgraded to 2017.2. Now got past the getting stuck problem at 'console disabled' . But seems Kernel Boot it is getting stuck at USBHID registrationta ( attached is the boot log). I know it is very difficult to predict the cause considering lot of variables. But in general, how do we debug this kind of kernel hang issue? I am attaching all dts files I am using.

Hmm.  Can you disable USB in your defconfig ( menuconfig if you'd prefer ) and see if that is the issue?  Is this a custom board or a development board?

Hi @timduffy , It is a development board (Avnet Ultrazed). I disabled USB and HID in kernel and tried again. Still it gets stuck right above the the previous case ( right above USB initialisation was carried out).

It is likely not the USB then that was causing it, but the next thing it was trying to do. Is it possible that you have an address incorrect in your DTS entry, or a duplicate? It's possible the kernel is trying to access a peripheral that does not exist ( or is in reset? ) at that memory location. Or you have two peripherals with the same address in your DTS that are actually at different addresses in the PL.

Can you post a screen shot of the Addresses tab to confirm it is the same as you pl.dts file?

Hi @timduffy , Our PL portion do not have any IPs for now,except PS,MMCM and BRAM. The block diagram only has a PS, with 95 bits of EMIO taken as output of PS to connect to our custom VHDL code. There is no other IP other than a standalone BRAM generator and a Clocking Wizard. Both of them do not have memory addresses associated with it . Attached is the block diagram and address tab.  I matched it with pl.dtsi. I do not find any false memory addresses with it. It would be good to know what is the next device kernel is trying to register. How do i get to that information?  Which part of source code probably might help?

Do you have  ZCu102 board?  And if so, can you try and boot up their default image on it?  Then drop in your design in to see if you are seeing the same issue?

 

Unfortunately it's very difficult to debug drivers being loaded, as they all kind of happen asynchronously ( and there really isn't a fflush(stdout) for printk(), so you won't get the output from the driver if a failure happens right away ).

 

What about turning off other peripherals such as ethernet in the dts?  Maybe you have a misbehaving phy?

Here's a neat little reminder I left myself for debugging kernel startup issues:

 

  • Make sure you have the correct target machine set in the kernel
  • Make sure your kernel bootargs and/or the device tree specify the correct debug UART port
  • Make sure you have the following kernel bootargs set
    • earlyprintk
    • earlycon
    • debug
  • If those are enabled and you still have no output (or not enough output), you can check the kernel log ring buffer directly from uboot:
    • Allow kernel to boot and hang
    • Perform a soft reset on the board
    • use uboot's md command to display the ring buffer memory location (__log_buf)
      • This memory location can be determined from the kernel's System.map file

If you want a longer log buffer, I believe you can add the following command line argument:

 

‘log_buf_len=[value ending in K,M, or G]’

 

So for 1MB:

log_buf_len=1M

I have the same issue on the ZCU102 "bootconsole [cdns0] disabled and the system hang (or only the console).

 

I have built the system on the 2018.1 version.

If you run bitbake linux-xlnx outside of petalinux-build, I've found that sometimes the kernel configuration does not get applied properly. For me the tell-tail sign is that there is no timestamp in front of the kernel messages (I do have PRINTK_TIME enabled). Then it stops at that exact same spot (Console disabled)

This Linux log buffer looks like an interesting tool. Kernel boot debugging appears to be a necessary evil of booting Linux on the MPSoC.

 

I looked in the System.map output file from building the Kernel. I find __log_buf here:

I had the same issue when using a kernel generated by Petalinux 2017.4, but using vanilla U-Boot (SPL + proper) instead of Xilinx FSBL + Xilinx U-Boot. In this case, the "console" was missing in bootargs (from system-top.dts):

A dirty solution is to set the bootargs in U-Boot during boot, since these are preferred over the ones given by the device tree:

As suspected earlier in this thread, the kernel kept booting, it just didn't output anything on UART after the transistion from earlycon.
