Connecting Terminal to ZC706 Windows

I am trying to boot Zynq from SD Card. I believe I have the SD Card partitioned correctly. I followed these directions to prepare the SD Card.

http://www.wiki.xilinx.com/Prepare+Boot+Medium

For the boot.bin file I used the  u-boot.bin located in the <petalinlux-project>/images/Linux/ folder.

It seems as though the Vivado Hardware Manager is recognizing the board when it is connected through JTAG. I have also made a USB to UART connection. I cannot seem to make a serial connection using Putty. On COM ports 1 and 3, a connection is opened but all I see is a black screen. I cannot open a serial connection on any of the other COM ports. When I turn off the board, I am still able to make connections to ports 1 and 3. I have read here

http://www.wiki.xilinx.com/Setup+a+Serial+Console

that you should use 9600 as your baud rate, however I am told by others that the rate should be 115200.

I am not sure if there is any way to probe COM ports. Is there some issue with using Putty to make a serial connection to the board?

HI @jackfrye11 @meysam.gdz

You need to install the  CP210x USB-to-UART  drivers in windows then the USB -uart driver will detect in your machine.

Please follow isntallation steps mentioned in this link (Page:5): https://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/boards_and_kits/install/ug1033-cp210x-usb-uart-install.pdf

Use teraterm and set the baudrate as 115200.

Thanks & regards

Aravind

Hi Aravindh,

I actually have installed it but still I have black screen problem, which probably means that the board is not booting from SD card.

regards,

Meysam

Hi @meysam.gdz

Can you check your boot mode jumper settings.

Please refer this link for SD boot mode jumper settings:

https://xilinx-wiki.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/A/pages/18841655/Prepare+Boot+Medium#PrepareBootMedium-ConfigureBootMode

Are you suing teraterm or putty for serial console.

Thanks & regards

Aravind

@aravindb

The jumpers are set correctly, and I am using the Putty as serial Console and I see all the LEDs are green except "done" which is off.

I even tried with another board and also on Ubunto on my virtual machine (with the aid of picocom, gtkterm, minicom). None of them works.

Regards,

Meysam

Have you tried a simple bare-metal system to confirm your serial port and terminal are setup correctly?

If that works, then the next step would be to try a pre-built release image for your board, found here: https://xilinx-wiki.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/A/pages/18842543/Zynq+2018.2+Release

Terry

Thank you I could solve the problem. Apparently while building the image for SD card, in the configuration window, I had to set the default boot method as "SD card" instead of "flash memory". This step was missing in the toturial I was following.

Best Regards,

Meysam
