Kernel Panic

Hi, 

i'm using linux embedded 3.1 on ML605 with microblaze processor.

I have a program that opens a streaming to a binary file on a NAS and in a while(true) it uses a fwrite() to write a struct on this file. 

After less one minute i have this message

Hi , 

I've been having a similart crash on Embedded Linux kernel 3.0.0 with Microblaze Spartan6. CPU ver is 8.30

My RAM start address is 0xC0000000

My Kernel start addres is also 0xC0000000 

This is important because TASK_SIZE = CONFIG_KERNEL_START in /arch/microblaze

This specific error indicates that the address which faulted is in the kernel space and we're in kernel mode.

 

I'm investigating , but there are a few things that puzzle me:

 

1. I'm not sure why when in kernel mode, a kernel space adress that is not mapped is a kernel bug. 

    Are all kernel addresses should be mapped? or mapping is user space thing?

2. Reading ESR can give you a clue to which fault was it ( taken from MicroBlaze Processor Reference Guide )

    esr=00000912 ====> DATA TLB MISS exception. 

    Yet the call trace shows page_fault_instr_trap. Should be page_fault_data_trap IMHO.

3. I logged some other DATA TLB misses. I get thos a few at startup ( DATA TLB size is really small in Microblaze )

    All of them seem to be virtual addresses ( I'm using an MMU in virtual mode ). So, a physical address seem odd. But I     don't if this is a HW problem, a kernel configuration problem, a bad mmap() in user space....

Looking at ESR in all crashes in this thread, they are all DATA TLB misses ( assuming big endian when reading registers)

 

Can you confirm that your kernel start address is 0xC0000000 ? 

 

From the MB reference guide, the EAR ( Exception Address Register ) is supposed to represent a virtual address:

 

"A data TLB miss exception that specifies the (virtual) effective address accessed"

 

However,  EAR  = 0xCXXXXXXXXX in all execptions. How to recover from this?

Maybe a patch to translate back to virtual address? 

Maybe eliminating the Oops? Can handle_mm_fault() handle a physical address ?

I solved the first problem modifying the TASK_SIDE in the kernel configuration with the value 0xD0000000.
