Kernel hangs at "bootconsole [earlycon0] disabled"

 Booting linux on Microzed. Compioled source code, DTS, and fpga.bin. Every thing  is going fine till it hangs at

I assume it's not hanging, but just not printing to your serial console anymore. That usually happens when the wrong serial device is provided to the kernel (the console=... parameter). Try changing ttyPS0 to ttyPS1, or the other way around.

 

Another possible source of this error might be your rootfs. I don't know what you use, but you probably have to tell it to run login on your serial device.

I am facing the same issue on zc702 board also.

I tired changing PS0 to PS1, but some garbage started coming on the console. Could yuoiplease tell me how do I I tell the rootfs to run login on my serial device. By the way I took ramdisk image from http://www.wiki.xilinx.com/Build+and+Modify+a+Rootfs (under prebuilt images). I think it should be a complete filesystem with login prompt.

when I checked it again, I can see readable characters and at teh end it says : can't find /dev/ttyPS0. Thsi happend when in kernel command line I changed ttyPS0 to ttyPS1

Since you have access to a zc702, you could take the images from the wiki (http://www.wiki.xilinx.com/Zynq+Releases ) to test. And then replace the pre-builts with your images to see which part introduces the issue.

Since I just ran into this myself, make sure you have

CONFIG_SERIAL_XILINX_PS_UART=y                                                   
CONFIG_SERIAL_XILINX_PS_UART_CONSOLE=y 

 set in your kernel config.

That usually happens when the 'console' argument to the kernel is wrong or missing. So, check what you pass as console device to the kernel and that it matches your platform.

Any channce you have both UART0 and UART1 enabled in the hardware? If so, try disabling UART0 in the vivado hardware config, or simply modify system-top.dts to disable UART0: 

 

In system-top.dts, at the end of the file add:

 

&uart0 {

               status = "disabled";

};

In fact yes. I was using both uart0/1.

 

Yesterday after removeing from the HW the system booted up correctly.

I just tried to disable it in the Linux config, it worked too.

 

By the way, to be added in the system-top.dts is the following code:

&ps7_uart_0 {
               status = "disabled";
};

Do you have any explanation for this issue?

 

I'm planning to use the second UART from the CPU1 (making the system running in AMP mode). This will be still possible disabling it in the linux kernel?

Do you maybe have a AMP guide up-to date to the SDK2014.2 which covers the MicroZed board too?

I met with the same issue, and contacted with the local Avnet application engineer for help. He recommanded a slight modification to system_conf.dtsi:

 

In the alise part, adde one line:

serial1 = &uart0;

 

Then both UART0 and UART1 can be used. It seems that the automatically generated configuration files may still need to be manually modified according to practical applications.

Hi 

This early console is because of enabling 'EARLY_PRINTK" enabled in Menuconfig and adding "console=ttyxx earlyprintk" in bootargs.

This issue is coming if any one of the things are getting wrong.

You may want to put this in the ./project-spec/meta-user/recipes-dt/device-tree/files/system-top.dts file instead. This is because the system_conf.dtsi file will be auto-generated. Doing this fixed this same issue for me.
