Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt

Hi, all,

 

I use the DN8000K10PCI from dini group. I'm trying to install Xilinx Open Linux on the Virtex4 FX100-12. My dts file is pasted below:

The Uartlite is enabled in the kernel. (The reason I have to use Uartlite is because the board datasheet only tells two pins of rs232, rx and tx. If I use uart16550, I have to specifiy cts and rts pins which I'm not told.)

The kernel booting message got hung as showing below:

When I resize the ramdisk to 16M, and modify the default kernel configuration file after patch with 40x/virtex4-defconfig accordingly. I manage to boot the kernel, but still with error. The kernel config shows below:

The interrupt controller only has two clients: one is the LED, the other is the RS232. But the error message --- "Xilinx intc at 0x81800000 mapped to 0xfddff000" shows 0xfddff000 which is not in my memory map.

I don't see anything obvious.  Have you compared your device tree to the virtex405-ml405.dts file in tree?

 

The interrupt controller mapping is good, the physical address matches your memory map, the virtual address won't match the memory map.

 

I don't know if you have baselined a kernel on a Xilinx board 1st or not, but if you have an ML405 board, that would be a great 1st step.

I don't have Xilinx boards, the board I'm using is from Dinigroup which is populated with a Virtex4 FX100. So I didn't compare the dts file.

Why before I resize the supplied ramdisk to 16M (randomly chose this size), only the bootlooder outputs to the terminal, no kernel booting message as the second figure shown?

When I resize the ramdisk, I also changed the responding config in .config, but not sure if the modification is correct.

Actually, the first time I boot the kernel after I resize the ramdisk. It showed another kernel panic, said kernel overflow. But I couldn't reproduce this error anymore, all the following attempts lead to the same interrupt kernel panic. I don't know if this has any relates.

I think that might be caused by any of the followings:

1. The size of ramdisk, ramdisk size configuration in kernel, the memory map setup in the EDK.

2. The interrupts of LED and RS232. If I disable all the interrupts, will the kernel stop working?

If the bootstrap loader runs, but the kernel doesn't start you have a bad device tree generally.

 

You should checkout the kernel debug section on the wiki at http://xilinx.wikidot.com/debugging-kernel-boot-problems it has some of this info.

 

The kernel needs the timer interrupt or it will hang during the boot when it determines the bogomips.  There are ways around that but more explanation is needed. 

 

I have booted the kernel before without a UART interrupt with the 16550 UART, but not the UART Lite.

I think I would use BSB (Base System Builder) in the EDK to build a system that matches the virtex405-ml405.dts file.  You don't have to put in some devices as it's a larger system.  I would also use the virtex4_defconfig in the kernel tree and don't change anything to see if you can get a good system baseline.

Given I don't the same hardware in my own board, for example, no EMAC, SYSACE, etc. as the ML405, do you mean to use BSB to build the rest of the system as same as the virtex405-ml405.dts? Or you mean to directly use the given virtex405-ml405.dts? Sorry, I didn't get your point.

Moreover, as I explained in my first thread, I cannot use uart16550 for my board, uartlite seems to be the only option.

I realize you don't need all the components and that's fine, build a simple system to get a baseline.

 

I would imagine that you can use UART 16550 is you tie off the cts rts pins, but the UART Lite should work also.

 

Yes create a simple system matching all the required components except UART Lite and then compare the device tree against our virtex4-ml405.dts to see the deltas.  Then use the virtex4_defconfig kernel config to build the kernel.

Yes, will do. Is the ramdisk suspect? Why the changing of the size of the ramdisk can make the console working? At least output the booting message even not successfully booting?

Do you really have 1 Gig of memory on the board as the device tree shows that you do?

Yes, I have one 1 GB memory, and when I run the memory test generated by BSB, it works.

Did you modify the BSB generated memory test so that it tests the entire 1GB range? By default it only tests a small portion of the memory.. Also, I've seen multiple instances where the standalone memory test (including one which had a very robust custom memory test) passes, but linux fails to load due to memory issues, so don't rule out memory problems just yet..

You could also edit the device tree to say it has less memory, like 256 Mbyte or less, and see the results. 

 

Probably make it match the corresponding device tree, ML405 or ML507 (don't remember 405 or 440), we have in our tree at arch/powerpc/boot/dts/xilinx* just so we don't have any other unknowns.

 

I don't know of any reason 1 Gig shouldn't work, just haven't done it myself and you're trying to get a baseline to work.

Here is the code from one my projects - 1024 is the length of the test - in this case, 1024*32bit is testing 4KB of the memory. 

 

 

status = XUtil_MemoryTest32((Xuint32*)XPAR_DDR_SDRAM_MPMC_BASEADDR, 1024, 0xAAAA5555, XUT_ALLMEMTESTS);

 

Change the 1024 to 1GB to test the whole range with 32-bit accesses.. You can do the same for the 16-bit (put in 2GB) and 8-bit (put in 4GB) tests..

I think the 1024 should be changed to 0x10000000 (256MB) instead of 1GB, becasue this is a 4 bytes test. In turn, 16-bit 0x20000000, 8-bit 0x40000000.

And I did this test, all the test passed withouth error.

The 32-bit test costs about 180 second to finish, 16-bit test about 380s, 8-bit test about 800s.

I'm going to build a kernel again since I updated the kernel source from the git server.

Yes, you both are right! It was the problem of external memory, even it passed the full size test!!

I changed the memory size to 512MB in the dts file, and everything is working fine.

 

But when I resize the ramdisk to 8MB, it has the error of complaining no init found, as showing below:

Looks to me like your ramdisk is not good as it also says there's no console device.

 

Maybe I'm stating the obvious.  Are you sure your process of building/resizing a ramdisk are good?

I followed the instructions on http://xilinx.wikidot.com/expanding-file-system step by step. It should be correct. But I might be wrong since I'm not very sober currently. Is that possible to have an 8MB ramdisk generated by you to test? I know it sounds immoderate.

Have you tried the one that's on the wiki.  It looks like it's 4 meg.  I don't have an 8 meg one ready to use.

 

Essentially you need to unzip it manually and mount it and then check to make sure it has all the necessary components.  Soberness might help, you never know with Linux.

 

You can do the same with the one that's attached or the one that's working and then compare and fix yours.

 

You might consider one of the books for embedded linux that we reference on the linux page of the wiki also.

The one on the wiki works as I said, but when I expanded to 8MB according to the instructions on the wiki, it doesn't. Anyway I'm very pleased the system at least is working even with a small size ramdisk. I'm trying to make it more suitable for my application. Thank you very much for you guys the valuable experience and suggestion. I will try to compare the expanded one with the original one to see if it misses any files even it's not likely.

Thank you very much John, the ramdisk error is solved. The problem was the command used to copy files.

On the wiki, the command is:

 

cp -rf /mnt/old-disk /mnt/new-disk

 This will create the following directory tree:

 

ramdisk.image.gz->
old-disk->
bin,usr,lib,etc....

 That's why the kernel cannot find init, I used the following command, the problem is solved. 

 

cp -rf /mnt/old-disk/* /mnt/new-disk

I expanded the 4MB ramdisk on the wiki to 16MB, it works fine. But if I added my own stuff, even just a hello_world excutable file into it. It will not able to boot. The message is shown below:

 I googled this thread (http://www.mail-archive.com/linuxppc-embedded@ozlabs.org/msg04011.html) saying this is because

 

The initrd image may be being corrupted when loaded into memory by the bootloader, and before it has been de-compressed by the ramdisk code (drivers/block/rd.c::crd_load). Gunzip should return an error if that's the case, as it will not be able to decompress the entire ramdisk. Your error may be explained because you're ending up with a truncated decompressed filesystem in the ramdisk.

 But it has no solution stated. To my understanding, the ramdisk can be modified freely, i.e. add more files, but why the gunzip is not able to uncompress all the files?

I fixed the wiki to remove that error, sorry about that.  This wiki page was contributed by the community and I should have tested it, but that's the way the open source community works.

 

You can always join the wiki and fix bugs also when you see them.

I would start by just putting a text file onto the ramdisk to see if that works. There still seems to be a problem with your process when you modify it.

You're welcome. Technically, I need 256MB ramdisk.

 

When I still use the 4MB, but put a text file, it works. When I expand the size (plus a text file), it doesn't.

And for the 16MB case, even I don't add any more file, it doesn't always work, sometime it works, sometime it doesn't.

 

Can this be the problem of bad memory? 

 

BTW, I modify the kernel to suport 16MB ramdisk, it was 8MB by default.

It sounds like you might still have memory problems. Also, for the 256MB ramdisk, will your RFS image use that much space, or will your application be using the space (ie, creating files that will not persist across boots)? If it's the app, then you may want to look into using the initramfs method instead of initrd. With initramfs, the ramdisk can grow as needed instead of having to create that huge file and program it.  If it's the RFS that is that big, then it doesn't really matter (though initramfs is a bit easier to manage in my opinion).

I just tested with 8MB, it works. I think either the ramdisk size has some limitation or I have bad memory block, when it was allocated, the gnuzip cannot uncompress the ramdisk to that block and end up with a trunked ramdisk.

 

To you question: the space is needed for my application. Is there anyway to use the ramdisk on the wiki to create initramfs, I don't want to mess up with busybox stuff at this moment given there is still some error not fixed yet.

Yes, you can use the ramdisk files that are in the initrd image on the wiki (that's exactly what I did). You then configure the kernel to use initramfs and then point it to the directory where your RFS is - not need to zip it up.. I don't remember every step that I had to do, but it wasn't very difficult to get going. Make sure to read the doc that John pointed you to in the Documentation directory, it has the details you need.
