Recommended Method for linux driver development

What is the recommended way to write a linux driver? Should I use the SDK or Eclipse with these steps http://wiki.eclipse.org/HowTo_use_the_CDT_to_navigate_Linux_kernel_source ? I just don't want to be using a text editor.

Thanks,

Kevin

I personally stick to vim + ctags and/or cscope.

Any other more interactive IDE solutions? I'm not sure how to work with eclipse or any other IDE (Xilinx SDK) in the petalinux environment.
