I need to install 3rd party modified petalinux 2014.4, but I already install 2017.2 on my machine. if I install 2014.4 to different folder would there be any conflict between the two in term of compiler etc etc
thanks

There should be no conflict as long as they are installed in separate directories and you source settings.sh from only one version per terminal session. I run 2014.2 and 2016.3 installed on a single VM and they both work just fine as long as I follow that rule.

Also ask for the matching version of Vivado for that 3rd party petalinux. It is usually preferable to use the same version Vivado and petalinux.
I have 3 Peta versions, in different folders:
2017.2: petalinux
2017.1: petalinux_20171
2016.4: petalinux_20164
Source the matching settings.sh.
