I am not sure, but I think that it is okay for any system.  Make sure that you compile your kernel with the ramdisk.image.gz file in the arch/powerpc/boot/ directory.  Make sure that you configure your kernel properly using make ARCH=powerpc menuconfig and save the file in the arch/powerpc/configs/44x/ directory.  Make sure that your correct dts file is in arch/powerpc/boot/dts/ directory and that it is named xxxx.dts where your _defconfig file contains:

CONFIG_EXTRA_TARGETS="simpleImage.xxxx simpleImage.initrd.xxxx"

for example:

virtex440-ml310.dts

CONFIG_EXTRA_TARGETS="simpleImage.virtex440-ml310 simpleImage.initrd.virtex440-ml310"

Use make ARCH=powerpc 44x/your_config_file_defconfig to load you save configuration.

Make sure to run make ARCH=powerpc zImage and then use the simpleImage.initrd.xxxx image as the simpleImage.xxxx will not contain the ramdisk.

You may have tried all of that already, but just is case I wrote it here.  Good luck.
