zc702 Linux boot hang whie "Calibrating delay loop..."

Hi All,

 

I have downloaded the latest Linux sources and tools (2011.09-50).  I built the default Linux kernel per the Wiki.

 

When the zynq development board the boots, it hangs when it is "Calibrating delay looop..."  Below is the boot trace.

 

Comparing with the good kernel boot trace (attached further down), I see the Virtual kernel memory layout is different.

 

Any suggestions on what might be going on is appreciated.

I compiled the zynq-zc702.dts file per wiki instructions, copied it to the SD card and now Linux 3.3 is happy booting on the dev board.

 

Now for the real work - tayloring the kernel to our needs.  

 

Another question on the dts/dtb file.  If I remove a driver from the kernel that is specified in the DTS file, I need to remove that driver's entry in the DTS file, right?

I'm guessing you need a device tree to match your kernel. Use the dts file in your kernel source.

I thought that doing the "make ARCH=arm xilinx_zynq_defconfig"  per the Wiki would configure the kernel for the Zynq 702 board.  Is this not correct?

You switched kernel versions, 3.0 to 3.3, and as he said you need a new device tree binary. 

 

The kernel page (a bit buried) tried to describe this.

 

For Linux kernel 3.3 and later, the device tree syntax has changed for denoting interrupts. To calculate the correct value in these releases, use Table 7-3 in the Zynq-7000 EPP TRM to locate the correct SPI ID# for the desired peripheral. Then, subtract 32 from this value. The result is what should be entered into the device tree interrupt field.

Great! Glad to hear that.

The device tree can have entries for which there is no kernel driver. If there's no driver, there's no code to run so it should not be an issue.

Hi,

 

I also tried to compile the kernel and the device tree as described on the zynq wiki page. My linux kernel is running but when starting the Zynq TRD application I got the following error message (and no signal on the monitor):

QScreenLinuxFb::connect: No such file or directory
Error opening framebuffer device /dev/fb0

 

The linux boot messages (see below) seems to be sensible. 

 

Any ideas?

Hi Matthias and Dave,

 

the problem is that you are trying to run the 14.1 Base TRD on a 3.3 linux kernel. The 14.1 Base TRD release requires a specific linux kernel commit which is based on a 3.0 kernel tagged xilinx-14.1-build3-trd. On top of that you need to apply a patch (delivered with the Base TRD) which will give you a modified kernel config file and devicetree to work with the underlying hardware. Please make sure you follow the instructions on our Base TRD wiki page - step 7 in specific: http://wiki.xilinx.com/zynq-base-trd-14-1

 

The 14.2 Base TRD update will be based on the 3.3 linux kernel. The corresponding linux kernel and u-boot tags are already pushed out but the 14.2 Base TRD package hasn't made it on our website yet. Please wait for the 14.2 update if you want to use the 3.3 kernel. It will come with a corresponding kernel patch to match the config, devicetree and hardware changes of the 14.2 update/3.3 kernel.

I'm running into this inifite loop as well after boot:

Any you are right that a 3.3 kernel is being used in the ug873-deisgn-files.zip that is linked on the web site with the 14.1 TRD.  I tried building my own kernel in order to follow along with chapter 5 of the Concepts Tools and Techniques tutorial.

However, that 3.0 kernel that I built paniced because it couldnt' find the debug circuitry where it expected it.  Is there a 14.1 version of ug873-design-files.zip somewhere that I can download?

If you are trying to run the 14.1 TRD, you have to follow the instructions on the TRD wiki on how to build the kernel. It requires you to pull a specific kernel tag from our git tree and then apply a patch against that kernel. You also need to use a specific devicetree that has the framebuffer driver instantiated. Both the patch and the devicetree are part of the 14.1 TRD package.
