Is AXI required for fabric peripheral to communicate with ARM core in US+?

Rookie question, but:

If I create an HDL peripheral that lives in the PL fabric and does not use any hard cores, does this peripheral necessarily need to have an AXI interface in order to communicate directly with the ARM core?

For example, if I make, say, a UART IP block purely from HDL code and want to pull data received by this block into C code in one of the ARM cores, is the only (or best?) way to do this by including an AXI interface?

You could use the gpio via the EMIO on the PS to connect to your custom IP.

 

However, the wizard will create an AXI interface for you. So, why not just use this?

I planned to make the device AXI and use the wizard, but had been told by a coworker that adding an AXI interface might be unnecessarily complicating things.
