Using 10G SFP+ module for optical link on KC705

Hello, 

I have a finisar 10G ethernet compliant SFP+ optical transceiver (https://www.finisar.com/optical-transceivers/ftlx1471d3bcl). It is designed for 10G ethernet links. Do I need to use a 10G ethernet PCS/PMA core to interface properly with this device? Or could I use a GTX with the proper line rate and encoding (64b/66b)? I have used a GTX example design with a 10Gbaser protocol with 64b/66b encoding selected and the link worked with the generated data stream but I have seen other people implement a sfp optical link using the 10G pcs/pma core as well. What are the differences between each implementation? Thank you in advance.

Hi

 

You need to use the Core instead of the simple transciever generated logic if you need to implement the 10G link.

 

Transciever only implements the PMA part of the PHY and the PCS logic is implemented in the fabric by the core.

 

Refer to below snapshot from PG068 for details on blocks implemented on fabric and transceiver.
