Using System Monitor to calculate real-time power usage in Virtex 6

Jump to solution

Hi,

I'm interested in getting the real-time power measurements from my design on a ML605. I looked into the example design of the system monitor (ml605_system_monitor_rdf0012_13.2_c.zip). In the example, the voltage(Vccint) is obtained by readingthe registers in the system monitor, and the current (Iccint) is calculated using a 5mOhm resistor. The power can be computed from the voltage (vccint) and current (Iccint). since P = VI.

I would like to use this example for my purpose, however I am uncertain where did the 5mOhm come from? I looked at the schematics and datasheet for the ML605/Virtex 6 devices, as well as the system monitor user guide (ug370), but I was unable to find any relation to the 5mOhm. Can someone explain where the value came from?

Thanks,

Vince

Hi,

A shunt resistor is required to measure the current. Check Pg 60 Figure 33 which talks about this - http://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/user_guides/ug370.pdf

Thanks,
