Artix 7 - Configuration Flash manufacturer limitations?

Jump to solution

Hi,

I have a self-designed PCB with Artix 7 (XC7A50T-FGG484) and would like to store configuration in QSPI flash. For that purpose, I tried to use Microchip's 26VF064B, but it was impossible to program it using Hardware Manager in Vivado with HS-2. Every trial resulted in unknown flash with Mfg ID = 0 etc. Exchanged the flash to the N25Q256 (which is on the list in HW Manager) resulted in programming without any problem.

Microchip's flash have at least the same or better parameters (except the size) and it looks like only software does not like to program it. The question is if Xilinx really limited supported flashes to the few available on the list in Vivado?

This is like self-shooting as those flashes are unavailable in most distributors.

Best regards,

Bartek

Hi @bartoszek

Check for https://forums.xilinx.com/t5/Virtex-Family-FPGAs/SPI-NOR-FLASH-MT25Q-not-listed-in-Impact-14-7/m-p/800669#M26018

You can test non supported SPI PROM using skip ID Test (Note: This method is not officially supported.)

For e.g. "W25Q80DV" compatible with "W25Q80BV" seems to have the common command set. It is possible to avoid ID check by setting environment variable XIL_IMPACT_SKIPIDCODECHECK.

Bhushan

Thank you very much, @bpatil!

Do parallel flashes also suffer from such incompatibilities?

Hi @bartoszek

You can check complete list of supported BPI and SPI flash for Kintex-7 at

https://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx2017_4/ug908-vivado-programming-debugging.pdf#nameddest=xGenerateBitstreamsForUseWithConfigurationMemoryDevices (Page 328 ~ 332

Xilinx supported BPI and SPI are those flash, which are tested @ Xilinx.

That does not mean other flash's which having similar specifications but different IDCODE can not be used.

I hope you can understand what I mean.

Bhushan
