Replacement Parallel NOR flash for 7-series

Jump to solution

The Micron PNOR flash specified in UG470 (G18F, P30 and P33 families) are all end-of-life. We'll need synchronous read supported replacement chips. Do you recommend any new flash that work synchronous mode? Thanks.

Hello @weberluo,

Yes, its true that most of the synchronous flashes are going EOL.

Xilinx is not having any plan of including new synchronousu BPI flashes.

If the requirement is of high speed configuration we will request you to go for Asynchronous BPI flashes or QSPI flashes with high clock frequencies.

Refer UG908 to find new flashes for your applications.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.

Hi,

Many customers have asked the similar question.

All Xilinx recommended Flash devices for each FPGA series are listed in the UG908, Appendix C. All these memory devices are tested by Xilinx.
But there may be a little difficult to find one to want keep the compatible package with original one in this list. Another option is you can check the memory supplier website, if they have a package compatible substitute, it may be a good choice. But you need to test it by yourself.

Thanks Zhiq. For Kintex-7 all of the flash ICs listed in UG908 that supports synchronous read mode are obsoleted. The question is that whether Xilinx will suggest an updated list for newer chips.

Thanks Kvasantr.

For the BPI flash, we're also using XAPP518 method to upgrade it from connected PCIe. If we move to asynchronous flash, I'd guess it should also work, correct? It's probably the matter of how fast the clock can be to meet our requirement.

If we move to QSPI, is there a reference design of upgrading thru PCIe? Thanks.

Hello @weberluo

Yes, Your understanding is correct. Asynchronous flashes will work fine.

Considering the clock source is fast enough to achieve the configuration time of device.

Please refer EMCCLK source of clock from configuration guide of series which is UG470 for more help.

Also the QSPI must work in this case. Please refer XAPP1179.

Thank you.
