question of k7 programming

Jump to solution

Hi, everyone:

I'm using k7325tffg900-2 and program mcs file into a spi flash of 128Mb(i.e, 16MB). However, the mcs file is 16.3MB. I programmed this mcs file into the flash and it works!  I'm confused why it works. Does anyone know the reason?

Thanks for reply.

The configuration bitstream length is 91,548,896bits, which is shown in UG470. Although the mcs file is 16.3MB, the mcs file includes some additional data such as sync word, CRC etc. So the actual data writing into the flash is less than 16MB.

@fimwest

@mage is correct in pointing out that the bitstream size for the Kintex-7K325T is about 91Mb.  This is also the size of the .bin file, which is loaded bit-for-bit into the FPGA during configuration of FPGA.  The missing piece to your puzzle is that the .mcs file is a text file that represents the .bin file.  The .mcs file is translated into a .bin file by Vivado or iMPACT before it is loaded into flash memory.  So, it is actually a 91Mb file that is being loaded into your 128Mb flash.
