"Specified option is not supported in incremental flow" error while routing a single net after using the ECO flow

Hello. Today I encountered a weird error and I'd like to know if this is a bug/unsupported feature or I'm just doing things wrong

This is the situation. I normally work with huge designs that take a ridiculous amount of time to implement. To overcome this, I use the new ECO flow which allows me to do some basic netlist editing inside the Vivado GUI to produce a bitfile much much faster.

Now lately I've been playing around with the incremental implementation to also get bitfiles faster (using the checkpoint of a previous implementation).

But today, I tried doing the ECO flow using a checkpoint created from an incrementally implemented design and that's when I started to get problems. My goal was to export a net to an output pin, so this is what I did

  1. Create an OBUF cell
  2. Connect the net to the input of the OBUF cell
  3. Create a new net and connect it to the output of the OBUF cell
  4. Connect that same net to an output port
  5. Report the route status to see that only the connection created on step 2 needed to be routed (expected)
  6. Route that one net using route_design -net ... (or just right click on the net and select "Route")

The error showed up on step 6 with the following message

ERROR: [Common 17-69] Command failed: The specified option is not supported in incremental flow.

Nevertheless, if I re-route the design from scratch, I don't get any errors. Also, if I unroute the design and try to route individual nets I don't get any errors either.

Have you had this issue before? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

Re: "Specified option is not supported in incremental flow" error while routing a single net after using the ECO flow

Hi

Thanks for the reply. The way I use the incremental flow is exactly as described in that AR.

I normally use a 3rd party tool for synthesis, so my procedure is this

  1. Export the netlist for Vivado
  2. Read the netlist and constraints in Vivado
  3. Link the design
  4. Opt the design
  5. read_checkpoint -incremental <path_to_previous_implementation.dcp>

In the scenario where I got the error, I had already generated a bitfile using that flow, so all I wanted to do next is to export a net to an output pin for debug.

Thanks!
