A bit confused about what I get for SDSoC or Vivado HLx license.

Jump to solution

Hello,

I am looking for a tool that will let me develop applications on larger Zynq UltraScale+ chips (11EG or 15EG). I am a bit confused about what I actually get when I buy Vivado HLx or SDSoC licence.

At the time of writing node-locked licenses are:

Vivado HLx - $2995 (Design Edition)

SDSoC - $995

Once I used evaluation licence (60-day or something) to test SDSoC. During installation Vivado/Vivado HLS were installed too. Somewhere I read that SDSoC is a superset of Vivado HLx capabilities. For example, as I understand, SDSoC calls internally Vivado HLS to transform C++ code to HDL.

Could someone explain what are limitations of Vivado included in SDSoC installation and how SDSoC can be cheaper than Vivado HLx if it is a superset of stand-alone Vivado? Is it matter of list of supported devices (e.g. limited to Zynq) or special features like Partial Reconfiguration not included in SDSoC standard license? Do I need separate separate licences to use both Vivado/Vivado HLS (e.g. to build custom IP cores, block design, export custom hardware) and SDSoC (to build CPU application)?

Thanks in advance for answers,

MM

Hello @mmaciag,

Indeed, the SDSoC system compilers target a base platform and invoke the Vivado® High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tool to compile synthesizeable C/C++ functions into programmable logic.

This and other info can be found here: https://www.xilinx.com/html_docs/xilinx2018_1/sdsoc_doc/nmv1517252127853.html

More info can be found here: https://www.xilinx.com/html_docs/xilinx2018_1/sdsoc_doc/index.html

Do I need separate separate licences to use both Vivado/Vivado HLS (e.g. to build custom IP cores, block design, export custom hardware) and SDSoC (to build CPU application)?

The answer is YES, indeed you'd need separate licenses, one for Vivado and one for SDSoC.

To see what features/tools Vivado HLx license of any edition supports, please see this link: https://www.xilinx.com/products/design-tools/vivado.html?resultsTablePreSelect=documenttype:SeeAll#buy

Hope the above is clear.
