Re: ISE WebPack 14.7 install on Windows 8.1 giving _pn.exe

Hi,

Windows-8 is not a supported OS with ISE.

Can you please use one of the below supported OS?

Microsoft Windows Support
• Windows XP Professional (32-bit and 64-bit), English/Japanese
• Windows 7 Professional (32-bit and 64-bit), English/Japanese
• Windows Server 2008 (64-bit)
Linux Support
• Red Hat Enterprise Workstation 5 (32-bit and 64-bit)
• Red Hat Enterprise Workstation 6 (32-bit and 64-bit)
• SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 (32-bit and 64-bit)

Check this related thread http://forums.xilinx.com/t5/Installation-and-Licensing/Xilinx-ISE-installation-problem-on-windows8-Release-Preview/td-p/245650/page/2

Re: ISE WebPack 14.7 install on Windows 8.1 giving _pn.exe

I didn't find any relevant info in the video, could you possibly type out the steps to get ISE 14.7 running under Windows-8?

BTW, I too find it amazing that Xilinx wouldn't officially support Windows-8 for the tool that is the only way to do designs with Spartan-6 and older devices. How are we to handle legacy support? Keep an old PC locked away somehow? My old Windows-XT machine is barely usable due to the lack of support for the operating system, so I hardly see that as an option.

Cheers!

Re: ISE WebPack 14.7 install on Windows 8.1 giving _pn.exe

Hello Lars,

Here are the steps to follow:

Rename libPortability.dll to libPortability.dll.orig, and copy libPortabilityNOSH.dll to libPortability.dll.

Do this in:

C:\Xilinx\14.5\ISE_DS\ISE\lib\nt64

C:\Xilinx\14.5\ISE_DS\common\lib\nt64 (copy dll from first location)

This turns off SmartHeap.

This will fix ISE and iMPACT crashes on file dialogs.

Thanks,

Vinay

Re: ISE WebPack 14.7 install on Windows 8.1 giving _pn.exe

That was quick! Thanks, it worked if I run ISE as Administrator.

There was a snag with the license manager that seems to have a similar problem. I get the error "_xlcm.exe has stopped working". Not sure if that is a problem, I will try to resolve my WebPACK license later today. I am trying to migrate an old ISE project using a Spartan-3AN device, I am not even sure it will be supported in 14.7...

Cheers!

Re: ISE WebPack 14.7 install on Windows 8.1 giving _pn.exe

Hi Ashish!

No, that seems to relate to older issues. My issu stems from trying to run ISE 14.7 under a not supported OS (Windows-8). I looked at the license file and checked it using the "lmutil lmdiag -c C:\Xilinx\Xilinx.lic" command and it checks out fine.

In http://forums.xilinx.com/t5/Installation-and-Licensing/Load-License-not-opening-for-14-7-ise-on-windows-8/m-p/468726/highlight/true#M7074 there is a solution, set an environment variable "XILINXD_LICENSE_FILE = C:\Xilinx\Xilinx.lic" and ISE will automatically detect the license without having to run LMUTIL. This works fine as far as I have tested, so problem solved for now.

Edit 20141110: There is an excellent desriptions on ISE under Win-8 in http://www.eevblog.com/forum/microcontrollers/guide-getting-xilinx-ise-to-work-with-windows-8-64-bit/ that also shows how to get PlanAhed up and running.

Thanks!

Re: ISE WebPack 14.7 install on Windows 8.1 giving _pn.exe

The '_pn.exe' is something that has with licensing to do, I guess.

Was the installation as such successful? The installation as such was successful for me when I ran it in Windows7 compatible mode (right-click, "Troubleshoot compatibility", "Try recommended settings", ...). But '_pn.exe', following after the installation, terminated with the error message quoted. However, it has not made any harm to me, maybe because I had earlier versions installed (10.1, 13.3; the program folders copied from a Windows7 machine, the installeers did not work in Windows8, not even in Windows7 compatible mode) and therefore required licenses; or because the WebPack is a freeware.

Running '_pn.exe' afterwards requires a modification of the 'Path' system variable ('My computer', righ-click and "Properties", select "Advanced System Settings"/"Environment variables", edit the 'Path' System variable, adding ";C:\...\ISE_DS\ISE\lib\nt" last , the "..." depending upon how/where you installed ISE14.7). Otherwise you will at once have an error message about a missing DLL.

I tried this, '_pn.exe' started and finished at once, without any error message. Sorry, I don't know whether this means that it ran successfully and fast, or that it crashed "softly" at once...

(I think that, if you try this above with  '_pn.exe', you should restore the 'Path' System variable to its original value afterwards...)

It works to run the installer in Windows7 compatible mode. It did for me. See my answer to Aaron.

Re: ISE WebPack 14.7 install on Windows 8.1 giving _pn.exe

I was attempting to run ISE 14.7 64-bit on my Windows 8.1 64-Bit (Surface Pro 3) and it was crashing/quitting after the splash page.

I followed the DLL renaming instructions from vuppala and that worked perfectly.

Thank you!

Re: ISE WebPack 14.7 install on Windows 10

You can get ISE to work on windows 10 but ISE is no longer receiving updates, so it might be said "no windows 10 is not supported"

Re: ISE WebPack 14.7 install on Windows 10

Hi,

Windows 10 is not supported for ISE.
However some users were able to run ISE on Windows 10. You may google and find some videos about the process. For example, this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBJlW40kAAU
Thanks,
Nupur
