Vivado Webpack 2017.3 setup fails silently

Jump to solution

I start the setup exe and it shows the "extracting" window, and then it shows the privilege elevation request. When I press "yes", the setup just stops silently and nothing happens.

Any ideas how to fix it?

Hello @fandrei,

I have been talking to some other install experts and it turns out that we have seen some other users with the similar issue before and the issue was due to the fact that if the Vivado installer of any versions cannot be launched on Windows, you’d need to check the services settings for the status of 'Server' service. It seems our installer need this service running.

Can you please double check if this is up and running in your case? See my screenshot below.

If it's not running, can you start this up and then see if the installer can successfully be started then? Thanks

Hi @fandrei,

1. Which OS and its version are you using for Vivado Webpack 2017.3 ?

2. Have a look at this AR which may help you on this issue. https://www.xilinx.com/support/answers/60118.html

3. Have you installed microsoft redistributable 2015 on your machine? If not, please install it first.

1. Windows 7 x64

2. This article looks very outdated. For instance, the setup file isn't named xsetup.exe anymore

3. Which redistributable? If you mean VC++ 2015 redist - I have only the VC++ 2017 redistributable installed, and the version from 2015 can't be installed when the later version is present.

Hi @fandrei,

1. VC++ 2015 requires for Vivado 2017.3 . You have to install it. To download it you can go through https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=52685     - After installing it, you need to reboot your system.

2. And can you provide the snapshot of the error message or any last pop up you face before it fails silently?

3. Also try to make your antivirus inactive for sometime while installing Vivado if you are using any on your machine.

Hello @fandrei,

Can you please provide a screenshot of "I start the setup exe and it shows the "extracting" window, and then it shows the privilege elevation request.", for examination?

Just to double check with you, do you have by any chance a folder on your desktop such as "GodMode"? Some people (see this forum topic:

https://forums.xilinx.com/t5/Installation-and-Licensing/Vivado-2017-2-install-on-Windows-10-pro-fails/m-p/808898#M19817), have resolved the issue by just deleting the folder and they could then able to install Vivado.

There is a way to run xsetup in command-line (non-gui/batch) mode. Check ug973, "Batch Mode Installation Flow" section on page 31 (https://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx2017_3/ug973-vivado-release-notes-install-license.pdf). Try installing Vivado in the batch mode and see if you can proceed further.

If still doesn't work, please share your xinstall_xxxxxxxxxxx.log file that would/should get created under  C:\Users\<users_name>\.Xilinx\xinstall location.

Thanks,

Anatoli

Hi @fandrei,

1. Try to run setup with administrator privileges. (Right click> run as admin).

2. Add exception for this in the antivirus program- if any.

Checking the task manager to verify if setup is still running in background or it is completely stopped.

Re: Vivado Webpack 2017.3 setup fails silently

Hi @hemangd

1. It's just impossible, because VC++ 2015 redist and VC++ 2017 redist refuse to install together. However, I've done a test in a clean VM and the setup works well with VC++ 2017 redist. So, the reason must be somewhere else.

2. There isn't any error message. And no popups. The last window that the setup shows is the UAC privilege escalation request.

3. This didn't help.

See the attachment. Taking screenshots of the UAC windows is impossible, Windows doesn't allow that.

> Just to double check with you, do you have by any chance a folder on your desktop such as "GodMode"?

Nope.

> There is a way to run xsetup in command-line (non-gui/batch) mode.

I have no idea how to get that xsetup.exe file, because your self-extractor always deletes it when exiting (in the case of the error I have, too).

> If still doesn't work, please share your xinstall_xxxxxxxxxxx.log file that would/should get created under  C:\Users\<users_name>\.Xilinx\xinstall location.

There is no any ".Xilinx" folder in my user profile.

Hello @fandrei,

It is still unclear about "I start the setup exe and it shows the "extracting" window, and then it shows the privilege elevation request. When I press "yes", the setup just stops silently and nothing happens.".

On what exactly you are clicking YES that causes the webinstaller to stop from being extracted correctly? Can you confirm (with a screenshot if possible) on this please?

Thanks,

It's the standard UAC privilege escalation request window. I can't take a screenshot of it, because Windows doesn't allow that.

It seems that the self extractor works fine, the problem is somewhere in the file that it launches (i.e. xsetup.exe)

I was able to get access to the extracted files by terminating the self-extractor process when the UAC prompt is shown. And when I launch the xsetup.exe from those files, it just exits and does nothing. No error messages, no logs created. Nothing. Batch setup doesn't work either.

Re: Vivado Webpack 2017.3 setup fails silently

Jump to solution

Hello @fandrei,

Please confirm, are you using the the Webinstaller for this or you have obtained a Single File Download (SFD) file of 2017.3?

The Webinstaller is this file: https://www.xilinx.com/member/forms/download/xef.html?filename=Xilinx_Vivado_SDK_2017.3_1005_1_Win64.exe&akdm=1

After you've obtained this, the file that you'd receive is "Xilinx_Vivado_SDK_2017.3_1005_1_Win64.exe", so it is an executable file, so no xsetup.exe at this stage. If you are mentioning the use of xsetup.exe, that means you've obtained a SFD and that is causing the issue.

Therefore, please obtain "Xilinx_Vivado_SDK_2017.3_1005_1_Win64.exe" from the link above and then right click on this "Xilinx_Vivado_SDK_2017.3_1005_1_Win64.exe" and do "Run as Administrator".

This will obtain and install Vivado 2017.3 for you. Please try this and see how far you'd get using webinstaller tool rather than a SFD.

Anyhow, to me, it looks like there is an issue with your Admin prodigies on this specific machine.

However, i would suggest using the Webinstaller this time and see if it will allow you to install the tool that way. Please try this and let me know the output.

Anatoli

All what I've written above is about the webinstaller. It doesn't work.

As I've written in the previous message, I got it by preventing your web installer from deleting the extracted files. You don't really read the messages, do you?

Hello @fandrei,

Please download a Single File Download from Xilinx Downloads page instead of using webinstaller and then try installing the SW and see if you can install the SW that way.

Here is the link for this: https://www.xilinx.com/member/forms/download/xef.html?filename=Xilinx_Vivado_SDK_2017.3_1005_1.tar.gz&akdm=1

It's all the same with the offline installer. I launch xsetup.exe, the UAC asks "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?", I push "yes" and then the xsetup process exits without any error messages.

Batch installation doesn't work either.

Re: Vivado Webpack 2017.3 setup fails silently

Jump to solution

Hello @fandrei,

Looks like a machine specific issue, as you've tried on another OS and everything works fine for you then.

One suggestion for you, as Vivado 2017.3 requires Microsoft Redistributables 2015, and in you case you don't have this, as it won't get installed as your current version of Microsoft Redistributables on this OS is Microsoft Redistributables 2017, then you can try uninstalling Microsoft Redistributables 2017 and then installing Microsoft Redistributables 2015 instead.

However, please note that as your OS is Win 7 64-bit, for Windows 7 systems, make sure that service pack 1 (SP1) is installed. Microsoft Redistributables 2015 only works on Windows 7 SP1, not Windows 7.

Hope this helps.

Hi @fandrei,

This may be repetitive, but the intention is to help the file run -

- >>["Batch installation doesn't work either."]
So you are saying batch mode also crashes without any message?

- Try this flow > Right click .exe> Properties and change Compatibity mode > Select Win7 and at the bottom check run as Admin.

- Try changing the UAC settings (as you are admin). Control Panel > Search for User account control > Never notify.
I guess Print screen option can be applied for screen shots after UAC prompt.

UAC settings.PNG

 - Check with IT on fixing the registry files (resetting .exe) of your machine for example - ask them about exe rstassociations etc. (I cannot recommend any 3rd party apps).

- Try completely disabling your antivirus (for few minutes option) and re-running the .exe.

Yes.

All the same. UAC prompt popup, and then it quits silently.

> - Try changing the UAC settings (as you are admin). Control Panel > Search for User account control > Never notify.

With UAC prompts off, there is nothing to take screenshot off. I start xsetup.exe, it starts doing something and then exits silently. No messages, no log files created.

>  - Check with IT on fixing the registry files (resetting .exe) of your machine for example - ask them about exe rstassociations etc. (I cannot recommend any 3rd party apps).

The xsetup.exe process does start. It just breaks after the start.

> - Try completely disabling your antivirus (for few minutes option) and re-running the .exe.

Already tried that. All the same, xsetup doesn't work.

All this looks like meaningless going in circles, we'd better find some better ideas. I could record a log of xsetup operations using procmon if you know how to read it.
