When to use DDR3 SDRAM ?

Jump to solution

Hi @avrumw ,  Hi All,

I want to know when to use DDR3 SDRAM (MIG) in a design?

Also, if Microbalze alreay is containing a RAM memory why some designs are implementing DDR3 SDRAM?

Kindly , see the attached pictures.

Thanks.

@ahmed_alfadhel,

Also, if Microbalze alreay is containing a RAM memory why some designs are implementing DDR3 SDRAM?

They are two different things.

When you have a great volume of data to be handled such that most of the FPGA BRAMs are used up or all of the BRAMs available are not enough, then it makes sense to store the data in an external DDR* RAM memory.

Yes, the DDR3 is for large data storing which need to be a controller implemented. The BRAM is for a few data which has the simple address/data interface.
