MGT connection over cable

Hello,

is it possible (or advisable) to connect two Series 7 devices (both Zynq) using the MGT Tranceivers over a larger distance (maybe 5 - 10m) by cable? The used cable and connectors could be (for example) from the RosenbergerHSD-Serie.

Re: MGT connection over cable

m,

Dpending on rate (1 Gbs, 5 Gbs, etc) and the loss of the cable and connectors, you may go the distance.

Simulation of the link is key with SI CAD tools from Mentor, Cadence, and similar (or just use spice).

Re: MGT connection over cable

There are three important factors for cables, impedance, insertion loss and pair skew (also known as phase matching). The impedance of the cables should be 50 ohms or 100 ohms differential. A good rule of thumb for insertion loss is to keep the entire channel to less than 18 dB of loss at the Nyquist frequency. Assuming that you have a 4dB of loss in the PCB to the connector that would give you a budget of 10dB for the cable. The pair skew is a manufacturing spec and should be kept below 0.10 UI so if you have have a 3 Gbps link with a UI of 333ps the pair skew should be less than 33.3ps. Getting this value as low as possible is desirable, but you will need to trade off against cost concerns.

Re: MGT connection over cable

Thanks for your repelies.

Is it recommended to connect the FPGA pins to the connector directly or with a protection circuit in between?
