Jitter Attenuator

Hello,

I have a question about the optional PCI Express Jitter attenuator ICS874001 which can be found on several evaluation boards. This component is used to "clean" a clock signal. I agree that it can be useful when the clock signal comes from an external source (connectors can degrade his quality, the clock source is unknown and may be poor quality…). But when the signal is generated directly on the evaluation board, clock generators and their characteristics (jitter, precision…) are known. Consequently, it is possible to define if a jitter attenuator is needed or not. Why is this component optional on cards that generate their own clock signal (ML510 for example)? In which case do you use it?

Thank you!
