RFSoC ZCU111 for High speed Application

Hello,

I was searching for the SoC Evaluation kit which supports atleast 2 lanes, each of ~25Gbps link rate. I am able to figure out RFSoC ZCU111 kit and I guess it woud be suitable for 25Gbps link rate as it has the GTY Transceivers.

 Going forward, I have some specific requirement on the transceiver blocks and listed below.

1)Can GTY transceivers support Spread spectrum clocking (SSC)? 

2)Can I work with Bonded mode with 2 XCVR lanes @ 25Gbps (x2 bonding)?

3)Can I dynamically switch between Bonded mode and non-bonded mode?

4) I may need to use 128b/132b encoding which the hard block doesn't support. Can I write custom PCS as per my requirement and use with the GTY PMA?

5) I hope there will not be any drop in data rate below 25Gbps when I use 2 transceivers together in FMC+ connector of the kit. Some limitations for example, GTY meant for ~32Gbps, but in the ZCU111 kit, Transceivers can be configured upto only 16Gpbs in Bonded mode etc. will not be there.

1)Can GTY transceivers support Spread spectrum clocking (SSC)? 

- you can check the SSC support in ds923 the  "RXSST" parameter.

2)Can I work with Bonded mode with 2 XCVR lanes @ 25Gbps (x2 bonding)?

- 'Bonding' means two lanes RXDATA is aligned? If so,  You have to use fabric logic to bond the two lanes. there is no bonding inside GTs at 25Gbps.

GT channel bonding feature requires 8b10b decoder, which operates at lower speed.

 

3)Can I dynamically switch between Bonded mode and non-bonded mode?

- this depends the user logic for bonding the two lanes. this is possible.

 

4) I may need to use 128b/132b encoding which the hard block doesn't support. Can I write custom PCS as per my requirement and use with the GTY PMA?

- yes

Hi,

Thank you very much for clarifying my first level queries.

Rearding Spread spectrum clocking, I understood that receiver side is capable of receiving the data if the incoming stream within the specified Spread spectrum threshold. This is Spread spectrum tracking (SST)

If I want to downspread the transmitter clock (SS clocking) in the FPGA what is the way to achieve it ?

you can down spread the reference clock. modulation frequency is 33khz or so, right?

Hi @borisq ,

 

Yes, ~33KHz. You mean to say that the transceiver input reference clock itself is downspread? for example I need downspread the 156.25MHz clock input itself. It could be achieved by Clock synthesizer with SSC support.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I was going through the transceiver wizard and configured the lanes to 10 Gbps. But seeing Spread spectrum clocking is disabled.

maybe you can slow down the line rate.

 

it depends on line rate. you can try 6Gbps or lower.

Yes, If I enable SATA preset, then SSC is enabled, but if I configure for 20Gbps Spread Spectrum option is getting disabled. How I can enable for 20Gbps.

SSC support for RX side is limited by line-rate. So wizard doesn't allow it.
