How to set up simulation in Webpack 12.3? (no simulator SW anywhere!?)

Jump to solution

Looking for a possible solution to a design challenge (a fast Manchester decoder) I ran across a Xilinx app note outlining just such a solution using a CPLD. Having no previous experience with CPLDs or FPGAs I was at first hesitant about the total cost of the solution, in time, money and learning curve. After more investigation into the subject I was excited to realize the Webpack is a free tool for CPLDA and lower end FPGA development. Being an experienced programmer VHDL and the development cycle would pose no special challenges so this looked promising. I managed to install a functional Webpack 12.3 in WinXP and was able to build the solution in the app note. For a new user the tool was/is a bit on the complex side but nothing I couldn't handle and the feeling of quality in its implementation is second to none.

So far so good but now I have a stupid showstopper problem. Try as I may I cannot come up with a simulator! Ok, I have got so far that it is not part of the Webpack itself but must be installed separately. Fair enough and no problem. Only I cannot for the life of me locate an installation package or file. Various posts here in the Xilinx web site and elsewhere in diverse forums give links that regularly lead nowhere. Apparently one option, the Modelsim package is a Mentor Graphics product. Yes there is a Mentor tab somewhere in the downloads section but nothing resembling Modelsim can be found there. Another option appears to be iSim (a Xilinx product?); again cannot locate that whatever I do. As to the other tools named in the simulator options I haven't even started with those.

OK, maybe the answer is obvious and I just don't get it. Even so, could some kind soul point to a _functional_ link/download page/something or alternately just say that it does not exist any more.

Either answer would be highly appreciated so I can stop running in circles.

Hello,

You can download ISE 12.3 from here:

http://www.xilinx.com/support/download/index.htm

Download the "full version".  Then, after installation, you'll be prompted to point to a license file OR choose "WebPACK" version.  Choose the later if you are choosing to run ISE as "WebPACK".

The ISE Simulator is installed as part of the ISE install.  For tutorials, see http://www.xilinx.com/products/design_resources/design_tool/resources/index.htm, in particular, "How to Use ISE Simulator (ISim)".

Hope this helps.

Thank you!

The video guide did it. ISim was there all the time and all it finally took to get working was a couple of clicks.. Go figure, but maybe I just am a bit thick...

Now it works perfectly. Thanks for your quick response, i'll go and simulate!
