Re: xsim gives stack dump

I'd come to report exactly this bug.

I can reliably cause Vivado to crash on a simulation, yielding a stack trace (as in the original post).

It seems that the crash actually occurs on exit, it is not specific to running from the command line. I can load the project (created from the command line) in Vivado GUI and run the simulation and everything works fine. As soon as I quit Vivado, I get the same stack trace.

Re: xsim gives stack dump

Hi @martin.rognerud@hgomersall,

Would either of you be able to share a test project that replicates the issue as an archive.

I can provide a private link if you don't wish to post it publicly.

If it can be reproduced in the latest builds then I can submit it to be investigated and fixed in a future release.

Best Regards
Aidan

Re: xsim gives stack dump

Sure, attached is a tarball that contains everything needed to generate a project that fails suitably.

If you untar it, a directory is created called failing_project.

Enter that and run vivado -nolog -nojournal -mode batch -source simulate_script.tcl

That creates and runs a project called "tmp_project". The simulation runs fine (writing an output file to tmp_project/tmp_project.sim/sim_1/behav/xsim/signal_outputs), but then at exit it  dumps the stack trace.

It's then possible to open the created project using the GUI and run the simulator from there and see the same stack trace on exit and not until exit (assuming Vivado was run from the command line).

For what it's worth, I encounter the same problem with an equivalent Verilog project.

Thanks!

Re: xsim gives stack dump

Hi @hgomersall,

Thank you for the sample project. I ran the simulation on Red Hat as I don't currently have an Ubuntu machine but I will see if I can source one.

I didn't see the crash that you reported.

Can you try running the script without the following line?

config_webtalk -user off

If you are using a WebPack version of Vivado then it is not possible to turn off webtalk, as per page 28 of UG973 and this may be causing an issue. I suggest this as the part xc7z020clg484-1 is provided as part of the WebPack version.

Let me know if this helps.

Best Regards
Aidan

Re: xsim gives stack dump

No change if I remove the config_webtalk -user off line.

Happy to gather any other useful information if it can be of assistance.

Re: xsim gives stack dump

Hi @hgomersall,

Ok, thanks for the update, let me get access to an Ubuntu machine and I will try it there.

I have found a Change Request for this issue that was machine specific.

I will get back to you tomorrow at the latest.

Best Regards
Aidan

I ran it in Ubuntu and again didn't get the crash. This is the version that I tried it in.

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
Release: 16.04
Codename: xenial

Can you try the script on another machine to see if this is machine specific for you?

What shell are you using?

Thanks
Aidan

Re: xsim gives stack dump

Interesting... We have two machines here that are both showing the exact same problem (both Ubuntu 16.04 LTS).

No doubt there are many things that could be different, but it's hard to see what to try next. The two machines are not similar (from different manufacturers and maintained independently), but we do try to maintain a common environment as far as possible.

I've done nothing nefarious like changing my LD_LIBRARY_PATH or anything I can think that might cause library confusion.

Re: xsim gives stack dump

To confirm, you are running the same Vivado command line as me (in the post with the tarball)?

Apologies, I didn't see your last question. This is with bash.

Re: xsim gives stack dump

Hi @hgomersall

Can you try with project mode and check whether you face the same crash or not? If same crash persist in project mode also, can you provide .xpr to reproduce it at our end? Since, i have also tried at my end using batch mode but no crash shown.

Re: xsim gives stack dump

Hi @hemangd,

I can subsequently load the project once it's created with the script, and the crash occurs again (after a simulation run). This is apparent in GUI mode (though I've not tried the same from the command line).

Attached is the .xpr file. Do you need any more that this?

Re: xsim gives stack dump

Hi @hgomersall

As i said in my previous comment, try with project mode means - create a project from scratch through Vivado GUI ( no tcl script) , add your sources and run simulation and check whether you still face the same crash after closing it or not. And than provide the .xpr if the crash still persist in project mode.

Re: xsim gives stack dump

Attached is a project I created inside the gui from scratch. It's much simpler than the previous project, but exhibits exactly the same problem.

It should be noted I'm using VHDL 2008, but the problem is also apparent with Verilog.

Re: xsim gives stack dump

Hi All
@hgomersall @martin.rognerud

I have attached two videos of the simulation running in case you can spot anything that I am doing differently.

The only change that I had to make to the project version was to change the path that the output file was located in i.e.

from file output_file : TEXT open WRITE_MODE is "/tmp/tmpIsAjxr/signal_outputs"; to my home directory

Can you make sure that you have full read / write permissions when running the Simulation as Vivado expects these for any files it needs to updates.

I have also attached the log file from the GUI version of the project.

Best Regards
Aidan

Re: xsim gives stack dump

Hi Aidan @amaccre

It is very similar apart from a few things.

Most obviously is the Webtalk stuff, which I'm not sure about.

The other things are:

1) There is a time report beneath the create_ip -name xbip_dsp_macro -vendor xilinx.com -library ip -version 3.0 -module_name xbip_dsp48_macro_DSP48E1

2) My xelab command is different:

Running: /opt/Xilinx/Vivado/2017.3/bin/unwrapped/lnx64.o/xelab -wto d1a296d2472f4d90a0e5b90b079f43d0 --incr --debug typical --relax --mt 8 -L xbip_dsp48_wrapper_v3_0_4 -L xbip_utils_v3_0_8 -L xbip_pipe_v3_0_4 -L xbip_dsp48_macro_v3_0_15 -L xil_defaultlib -L secureip -L xpm --snapshot dut_convertible_top_behav xil_defaultlib.dut_convertible_top -log elaborate.log

The other thing that might be different is that I'm running everything from /opt/Xilinx, which is actually a symlink to another directory on my system. It's rare, but I have encountered problems with other software failing to traverse a symlink properly. I could test this, but's quite a bit of work to reinstall in a different location.

Re: xsim gives stack dump

it is mostly the same on my end as well. I only run a wherry simple one file compile and simulate. tried both in  project and non project mode. the file I simulate is verilog so this does not seam to be restricted to language. I have tried to add all the switches you use and I get the same stack dump. I have also tried to close it down nicely by running the close_sim and close_project manually. When I do the close_sim I get the stack dump.

my Vivado is not pointed to by a symlink so I wold say it's not worth your time @hgomersall  to reinstall the whole environment.

I'm running on 3 physically different (setup is as similar as possible) ubuntu machines. I get the exact same stack dump on all.

my ubuntu:

$lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
Release: 16.04
Codename: xenial

@martin.rognerud Are you on webpack? This seems to me the obvious and big difference...

Re: xsim gives stack dump

@martin.rognerud @amaccre@hemangd

Interesting, we're on 16.04.3 as well. Could this be the difference? (The Xilinx machine seemed to be on 16.04.2)

Re: xsim gives stack dump

Hi All,
@hgomersall@martin.rognerud @hemangd

It took me a while to find an Ubuntu 16.04.3 server to run the script on, but I'm still not seeing the stack dump. (see attached)

I have contacted the Simulation community to see if they have encountered this previously and managed to replicate the issue.

As soon as I receive a reply I will keep you up to date.

Best Regards
Aidan

Re: xsim gives stack dump

I am also running into this problem on debian stretch.

My vivado is installed in $HOME/bin/Xilinx/2017.3.......

Maybe I can try to install it to /opt

Re: xsim gives stack dump

NO, install a new vivado under /opt doesn't help. I still got the same error.

Re: xsim gives stack dump

Hi ghuang@lbl.gov,

I am still pushing this issue, but for your own future support Debian is not a supported Operating System.

If you have other issues you will be asked to try it on a supported OS.

User Guide 973 lists the Linux OS that can be used.

Thanks
Aidan
