Difference between Clear, Preset, Reset and Set

Jump to solution

In a D-FF there are Clear, Preset, Reset and Set port.

They all seem to output '0' or '1' in a D-FF.

I don't know why they use different names.

Thanks for your help.

Set and Reset are Synchronous. They will only take effect on the next clock edge.

Clear and Preset are Asynchronous. They will take effect immediately. Be aware of possible glitches.
