List of file types for Vivado synthesis

I see lots of files, not all of which have obvious purpose.

  1. Where is a list of file types, especially those for synthesis? Or are some of these for implementation instead?
  2. Specifically, what are these files for?
  3. Which needs to be in source control, and which are outputs? Specifically which might I edit and which are created by the tools?
  • .jou
  • .js
  • .pb
  • .sh
  • .vds

Re: List of file types for Vivado synthesis

You are probably asking the wrong question...

The concept of "projects" and source control are like oil and water - they just don't go together.

Trying to revision control the entire directory structure is a messy approach. Any attempt to dig into the directory structure of the project and identify which files to put under revision control is just not recommended...

Take a look at this post on using scripts to build projects. When done this way, you only revision control the source and the scripts - no generated files and no files under the "project" directory.

Re: List of file types for Vivado synthesis

Hi @bcarltontrex

You can get the all the files created by synthesis and implementation in the below location

<project_dir>project.runs/synth_1

<project_dir>project.runs/impl_1

.v,.vhd,.xdc,.sv, ngc, edif are your input files while .jou,.log,.sh, .pb,.vds,. debug, .xml are created when you run synthesis ,implemenation while few files like compile.log,xvlog.log,simulate.log, elaborate.log are created when you run simulation. under <project_dir>project.sim/sim_1,behav.

Refer to below link of UG893 input and output files section to get detail description on this.
