Support for VHDL-2008

Hi,

Does Xilinx have a supported language features anywhere?  I am looking for supported features of IEEE 1076-2008 (VHDL)?

Alternately supported features of Accellera VHDL draft 3.0 (July 2006) would be helpful.

Thanks,

Jim Lewis

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

Jim,

The documentation I've seen in this respect is in the XST User Guide:

http://toolbox.xilinx.com/docsan/xilinx10/books/docs/xst/xst.pdf (XST User Guide)

Chapter 6 -> VHDL IEEE Support

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

Hi,

No some much information about VHDL 2008 in xst user guide... (http://www.synthworks.com/papers/vhdl_2008_DASC_s.pdf gives a good summary of what VHDL2008 is...)

Regards.

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

Hi.

I am eager to get VHDL-2008 support, too.

Some simulators are introducing such features now.

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

Hi Jim,

We are planning for this sometime in the future. The initial plan is to get SystemVerilog in XST and then follow it up with VHDL-2008. I would say we are roughly more than a year out due to all the other items we are working on.

Thanks

Duth

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

Has there been any progress on the support for VHDL-2008 in XST? Many of us are still quite interested.

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

I reviewed the XST document as well-- where does ISE mention the ability to compile with 1076-200X standards?

Are there any news about the state of the support for VHDL-2008?

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

Hello Duth

as being close to the 2nd year due from your answer and with the current release of ISE 12.4 still not supporting this for either XST nor iSIM, I would really like to know when there finally  will be a support for VHDL-2008 (which is a released standard since January 26th of 2009).

Berst regards

Bjoern

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

Hey Duthv (& any other xilinx employees),

Also interested in VHDL-2008 support in Isim and XST - any updates / progress reports to it implementation?

Cheers, Mike.

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

I second that question.

Any timeframe for when VHDL-2008 will be supported?

Steinar

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

It might take some time to get through the entire list of VHDL2008 changes (though they have been known for many years by now).  So just a roadmap indicating which feature will be implemented when (or at least the ones expected in the next release) would be of great value.

I know a lot of people think that since we have lived without these features in the past, they cannot be important.  But since a lot of them are based on attempt to make the design process more efficient, we will continue to waste time until they are implemented.

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

Maybe it is first time to support VHDL-2002. ISIM still chokes on protected types.

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

Maybe first support VHDL '93. The attributes S'DRIVING, S'DRIVING_VALUE, E'SIMPLE_NAME, E'INSTANCE_NAME, and E'PATH_NAME are not supported.

Maybe first support VHDL '87. The attributes S'STABLE[(T)] and S'QUIET[(T)] are not supported.

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

I don't think that all these attributes are synthetizable, especially these that involve time (Stable(t), Quiet(t)).

Actually, the compilation of the VHDL 93 compatible version of the new fixed point packages fails with the old parser of ISE. One of the reasons is that the Instance_Name attribute is unknown to the old parser of ISE.

See http://www.eda.org/fphdl/xilinx_11.html for more details.

These packages can be compiled with the new parser of ISE but the new parser doesn't work on old FPGAs.

The new parser can work on the old FPGAs by setting "-use_new_parser  yes" in the "Other XST command line options".

Thanks,

Vivian

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

Thanks a lot for this tip, I didn't know that.

In case it could help someone, the "Other XST command line options" preference isn't visible until the "Property display level" is set to "Advanced" in the XST process property.

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

Hey guys,

OK, so it would be very nice to see what the order of implemented features is going to be. We understand that the timeframe for getting round to this is somewhat flexible, and with the big move to PlanAhead for the 7 series I expect ISE14 to have a lot more VHDL-2008 support.

If I had to make a feature request it would be ARRAY AGGREGATES and ENHANCED STRINGS! Why has this been missing for so long. Would this be nice to have and simple to implement - YES!

test : std_logic_vector(8 downto 0);

test <= (1 => '1', 2 => 'Z', 3 => '1', (6 downto 5) => 2X"F", OTHERS => 'X'); -- "XX11X1Z1"

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

Yes, a list and a roadmap would be really great.  I would really like to see VHDL-2008 support in Xilinx ISE.

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

My guess is that there won't be any more VHDL-2008 features added to ISE now that Xilinx are shifting their development efforts to the Vivado tollset.

Re: Support for VHDL-2008

Does Vivado support VHDL-2008 currently?  I think the rest of you are correct, ISE will never support VHDL-2008.  That makes me sad.
