How to determine video clocking frequency and how to do VGA bits conversion

Hi,

I'm studying video output with VGA and I'm having two questions about how it works:

1. How do I determine the video clocking frequency given a resolution and a frame rate?

2. I want to display a RGB image, each channel having 8 bits. How do I convert these 8 bits to ZedBoard VGA specification of 4 bits per channel?

I strongly suggest following VESA CVT video timing and/or CEA video timing.

These definitions are suitable for you.

I'm not familier with ZedBoard. However, generally, I recommend to refer this connections.

 

RGB_IMAGE_R[1] = ZEDBORD_R[0]

RGB_IMAGE_R[3] = ZEDBORD_R[1]

RGB_IMAGE_R[5] = ZEDBORD_R[2]

RGB_IMAGE_R[7] = ZEDBORD_R[3]
