No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

I am using a Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC ZCU102 +ad9361, revision 1.1.

I followed the instructions and build an SD card containing ""zynqmp-zcu102-ad9361-fmcomms5" image.
Boot results are here: : https://gist.github.com/radcristea/b869ca64d6ed0a47e896b93015a896c6

But no image on HDMI monitor(HDMI port used with a HDMI to DVI adapter). No image on the DisplayPort (adapter also used).

UPDATE:
I have changed the monitor three times, checked HDMI ports and the DisplayPort.
I have used a DisplayPort - DisplayPort cable.
The point is that I don't the problem stands with the monitor and the cables.

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

Hi @racristea1,

Are you using an active adapter? Note that not all adapters will work.

I recommend you to use a HDMI monitor and see if you can get an output

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

Hello.

I have used an HDMI monitor, HDMI cable, checked both outputs.

I have used a DisplayPort - DisplayPort cable, I have changed the monitor from which nothing displays.

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

Hi @racristea1

As @florentw already mentioned before, you need to use an active adapter if you want to connect HDMI monitor via DP-HDMI.

I guess you use a passive adapter.
If yes, I suggest to use LCD monitor with DisplayPort or an active adapter to convert Displayport to HDMI. (convert protocol and electric characteristic. )

Would you try it ?

If no, you make sure a quality of DisplayPort cable and so on.

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

Hi @racristea1,

Do you have any updates on this?

From my understanding you tried with an HDMI monitor with HDMI cable -> it is working.

But when you try with Displayport it is not working? Is it correct? Are you using a DP monitor? Which one?

Do you have any information from the log?

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

Hello,

Sorry for not updating my post.

I reported this issue on another forum. There was a person who worked at the zyng_images software that I hoped to get an answer from.

https://ez.analog.com/fpga/f/q-a/101255/zynq-ultrascale-mpsoc-zcu102-ad9361-revision-1-1-no-image-display-on-hdmi-or-displayport

The updates are:

By following your steps for "Zynq & Altera SoC Quick Start Guide" , https://wiki.analog.com/resources/tools-software/linux-software/zynq_images#boot, I have encountered a problem. Build the SD card, containing "zynqmp-zcu102-ad9361-fmcomms5", Setup the pins correctly (1 ON, the rest OFF) the system boots. I used "Putty" to connect through the console.
Here are the results from the console output: https://gist.github.com/radcristea/b869ca64d6ed0a47e896b93015a896c6

Well, the issue remains at the display output.

Apparently, no signal is coming from the outputs ports : HDMI1, HDMI2, DisplayPort.
I have changed the monitors, changed the cables for HDMI, used an DsiplayPort-HDMI adapter, used a DisplayPort-DisplayPort cable.
I don't think the problem stands anymore with the monitors or the cables.

I have also followed this step: https://ez.analog.com/fpga/f/q-a/101255/zynq-ultrascale-mpsoc-zcu102-ad9361-revision-1-1-no-image-display-on-hdmi-or-displayport/300975#300975 , but the issue remains.

I have used a displayport - displayport cable. I have changed four monitors (from DELL), thus no result at all. Electrically speaking the screen is monitor is connected to the output (Displayport Port or HDMI 1 port, or HDMI 2 port) but the signal is not coming out to my screen.

Also, by using

xrandr

command  it prints :"Can't open display.", period.

I think the point is

I don't think the problem stands at my hardware. Either is a firmware bug, driver or a manufacturing problem.

HI @racristea1,

Can you can try with the ZCU102 TRD from Xilinx wiki?

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

Hello,

have absolutely the same problem with ZCU102 - D1 revision board.

As far as i can see the HDMI display will be not created, because the retimer IC of ZCU102 (TI dp159) doesn't receive an input clock from the clock generator SI5324 ( see kernel log below.)

[ 10.864716] xlnx-drm-hdmi a0080000.hdmi_txss: retimer-clk not ready -EPROBE_DEFER

The kernel driver of SI5324 clock generator seems to have some problems with the reading of it's registers, but finishes with "probe successful" ?!

I tried also defferent versions of TRD (2016.3-2018.2) also without success.

The displayport problem should be a compatibility issue (i'm waiting now for a new "compatible" display).

Is this compatibility problem of the Ultrascale+ PS DP - a ZCU102 specific issue, or a general bug of all Ultrascale+ MpSOC?

Best regards

PS: just mentioned - may be an I2C issue

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

Hi @patcher33,

Note that before TRD 2017.1 the HDMI is not using the on-board HDMI. Then note from 2017.1, the TRD require a Rev D2 board, this means with a production silicon.

I recommend you to use a ZCU102 Rev1 for the test.

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

... does it mean, that the DisplayPort support is also possible only with D2 Board and TRD>2017.1 ?

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

Hi @patcher33,

You should be able to use the DP on the Rev D1 board. However you might face some limitation with the ES silicon. But the TRD 2016.4 might work with some monitor and resolutions

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

We followed the procedure for TRD DM10 and DM6.  No display on HDMI or DisplayPort.

Where can we get real technical support?

Just waste weeks time by email and searching piece of information.

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

Hi @jamesfu,

Where can we get real technical support?

On the Xilinx Fourms.

We followed the procedure for TRD DM10 and DM6.  No display on HDMI or DisplayPort.

Did you start with the prebuilt images, do you get any output?

It is mentioned in this topic, do not use any adapters. Please use a HDMI or DP monitor

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

... there is a mismatch between the TRM documentation and the real design according to the active level of dpaux_data_oe. Doc says - active high, but Vivido generates active low output of the Zynq module. One need an additional inverter to control the FIN LVDS driver as implemented on ZCU102 board, but i cannt find such inverter in the schematic ...

Could it be a reason for all our problems with the displayport?

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

Hi @patcher33,

Please create a new topic for your issue. If we have multiple configuration, it might be too messy to find a "common" root cause.

You are talking about dpaux_data_oe which mean that you are using a live output while I was debugging the default DP from the PS.

From this message, I will reply only to @racristea1, the original author of the topic

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

Hi @florentw,

i'm also talking about "default DP from the PS". dpaux_data_oe is used by THIS DP to control an external LVDS driver. (see Table 33-23) If the polarity is wrong, than the AUX communication with the monitor fails.

The topic of this post is "No display on HDMI or DisplayPort" - failed AUX communication may be also a reason for this missfunction.

Are you sure, that ZCU102 doesnt have THIS specific problem?

Re: No display on HDMI or DisplayPort

HI @patcher33,

Are you sure, that ZCU102 doesnt have THIS specific problem?

The TRD is working properly for me with the ZCU102 with both DP and HDMI so yes I am sure it is not the issue
