Simple question regarding strides in VDMA

I have been reading about the stride optionality used when configuring a DMA or VDMA. However, it's hard to grasp why somebody invented the stride setting when saving a picture or a video stream into memory? I have been reading about the stride optionality and how it works but I have not quite understood why it can become efficient or great to use it. Are there special occasions for a video pipeline to have stride access? Isn't sequential addressing better than stride addressing, for example, a picture? Usually, they recommend you to set your stride to the horizontal line size of your picture and I really wonder why?

Hi @azurath,

 

I can think about at least 3 cases when you could use it:

  • Interlacing a video
  • doing a basic scaler
  • mirorring

However, these are pretty advanced use cases. You might want to configure the strides as you picture size to start.
