hi for all
how to program a fpga (virtex4 xc4vsx35) without using a jatg.
if the only solution is the use of compact falsh then determine what steps are necessary.

The native configuration interfaces for Virtex-4 are:
-parallel (SelectMAP8 or SelectMAP32)
These are outlined in more detail here:
http://www.xilinx.com/bvdocs/userguides/ug071.pdf (Virtex-4 Configuration Guide)
(Virtex-5 adds SPI and BPI capabilities as outlined in ug191.pdf)
The options available will largely depend on the board design.
While the programming cables (PC4 and Platform USB) are typically used for JTAG, other options for JTAG include SystemACE CF and microprocessor-based configuration (e.g. XAPP058/XAPP424).
The programming cables may also be used for slave serial - though this is less common.
The serial mode may be used by a Platform Flash, on-board microprocessor or CPLD.
The parallel mode may be used by the larger (8-32Mb) Platform Flash, microprocessor, or CPLD.

I am now currently working on the xc4vsc35 board, and recently just found the JTAG flying cables.
I have 2 questions for your attention:
1) Can i connect the PC to the board directly using the JTAG flying cable? (without using the USB platform).
If yes, can you show me the correct pin assignments to which i should connect to?
2) I am now currently connecting the board via PCI to the PC, can i program the board just using the PCI ports without using rs232 or JTAG?
Thanks a lot for your attention

It really depends on the board - I suspect there are dozens (if not hundreds) of different boards with a 4VSX35 on them. As such, there is no clean answer herer without knowing more details. Your board documentation should outline the configuration options.
Hopefully all boards at least provide access to the JTAG pins - that means you should be able to use the Platform USB, Platform USB II, or Parallel IV cables to program from a PC via USB or the parallel port respectively.
There may be other options depending on the board & circuit design...

I am currently still using the XtremeDSP Development Kit (Virtex-4), and i was thinking of connecting the kit to my laptop .
May i know is it possible?
FYI the kit only has a typical 4-pin power Molex connector and my newly bought laptop does not longer have the PCI slot
Thanks a lot for your time and attention.
