power estimation using xpower analyzer

Jump to solution

Hi All

I am doing power estimation using xpower analyzer. I am not sure if i am doing right as i am new to this stuff.

When i go to the properties of xpower analyzer, following properties are visible

load Physical constraint file

Load Setting file

Load Simulation file

Other Xpower abalyzer command line options

I am using xilinux ISE 10.1

Can i directly calculate power or do i need to give all the files above. When i see in project directory, only pcf file is there so where can i get setting and simulation file if they are necessary for power estimation.

I shall be very thankful for reply

Regards

Hello,,

If you're using the ISE simulator, you can generate the VCD file simply be checking the "generate vcd file" found in the simulator properties when post route simulating..

These may be useful,,

First of all you should use newer software version if you use device newer than Spartan-3 or Virtex-4. For older devices stick to 10.1.03.

Anyway, check the XPower Analyzer FPGA Design Flow:

http://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx12_1/hh_goto.htm#xpa_c_fpga_designflow.htm

Using simulation files (VCD or SAIF) will help to get an accurate power estimation as close as possible from the real design activity if simulation matches real design behavior. More details on XPA input files can be found here:

http://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx12_1/isehelp_start.htm#xpa_c_filetypes.htm

sir i have generated vcd file using modelsim later using xilinx i calculated power using generate power data(present in the process tab) .is this calculation process equivalent to xpower analyser process calculation sir?
