Parallel Vivado runs fail with Tcl_RegisterChannel error

Hi,

I'm trying to run multiple copies of Vivado 2018.3 (and even newer 2020.1) on a 16-thread Ubuntu server. When I even try to run two copies of Vivado, I get the error "Tcl_RegisterChannel: duplicate channel names" and Vivado quits. Is there a way to run multiple instances of Vivado on the same machine without such interference?

Hi @nachiket

You should be able to run multiple versions of Vivado just fine. I do this all the time on RHEL, CentOS and Ubuntu machines.

Just make sure to run them in separate terminal windows and ensure you run the correct shell (c-shell or bash) and source the settings64.csh/settings64.sh before running Vivado so everything is setup correctly.

Also make sure you run a supported version of Ubuntu. See the release notes, installation and licensing guide UG973 for versions we support for each version:

https://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx2020_1/ug973-vivado-release-notes-install-license.pdf

Do you see this error with every design (even Xilinx example designs)?

Or only with this specific design? Would you be willing to share it in order for us to try and reproduce it?

Best regards

Dries
