VGA Output

How difficult will getting VGA output using the DVI to VGA adapter on a Vertex 5 LX board?

Re: VGA Output

Hi, mkaffine,

the dificulty will depend on what you want to show on the screen: if you want to show a solid color or basic shapes, it will be quite simple, but if you want to show a complex image then it will take you more time.

I think that for beginning it will be easier to use the VGA. The first thing you have to do when using it is to generate the control signals according to the timing. In this link of Digilent Inc. you can find a reference VGA controller design for a Spartan 3E Starter Board. Even it is neither your board nor your FPGA, i think this can be useful for you to start. In the ".zip" you can find the VHDL files and a PDF explaining the signals.

Maybe if you gave more information we could help you more. What specific model of board are you using? Are you using VHDL or Verilog?

Kind regards,

Ignacio.
