100Gbps Ethernet over CFP2 optical modules crosses 10km of fiber with zero errors using Virtex-7 H580T FPGA

If you need to operate at 100Gbps over CFP2 pluggable optical transceivers, then there’s a 6-minute video you need to watch. In this video, Martin Gilpatric demonstrates the coupling of a Xilinx Virtex-7 H580T 3D IC FPGA communicating with a Finisar 100Gbps CFP2 optical module using four of the FPGA’s 28Gbps GTZ serial transceivers on a Xilinx development board. (Gilpatric is the Transceiver Technical Marketing Manager at Xilinx.) The Finisar CFP2 module is connected to a spool holding 10km of single-mode optical fiber.


Each of the four GTZ transceiver ports connected to the Finisar CFP2 module operates at 25.78125Gbps for an aggregate rate that supports 100Gbps Ethernet communications over the fiber. On the video, Gilpatric walks you through a 4-step process to bring up the high-speed Ethernet design culminating in 100Gbps traffic to a JDSU CFP2 tester with zero reception errors in both directions thanks in no small part to the auto-adaptive equalization built into the on-chip GTZ transceivers. Randomly generated Ethernet traffic flows through the Xilinx 100Gbps Ethernet LogiCORE IP instantiated in the Virtex-7 H580T FPGA and the zero-error transmission result is confirmed by both the external JDSU tester and the Eye-Scan capabilities, which is also built into the on-chip GTZ transceivers.
